News: Hurricane, Haunted Hotel will be scrapped

Posted at 8:49 AM EST (1349 GMT)

Mar. 1st, 2007 -- Work on the demolition of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion continues with the destruction of the Haunted Hotel dark ride as well as the Hurricane wooden coaster.

Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc, owners of the property are saving almost everything else that was at the park, but no one apparently wanted the coaster and the classic dark ride.

Lowcountry Wrecking, operations manager Joe McCready said that the Hurricane was being a particular challenge to tear down.   It took about an entire day just to take down 30 feet of track the first day of demolition.  McCready expects to have the coaster down completely within about a week.

Hurricane Category 5 (the official name of the coaster) was built by Custom Coasters International, Inc. for $6,000,000 and opened in 2000.  It featured many airtime filled hills as well as two intense helixes.

McCready said among discoveries they found during demolition, they actually found part of the original Attic building.  He was quoted saying, “They put everything in the ground. The foundation was left. It was underneath the old go-kart track beside the current Attic building.”

Bye bye Haunted Hotel...oh and Hurricane too. lol

Hurricane could have been a decent coaster if they had taken better care of it and it didn't have those awful G trains.

Hurricane fit the park well, it just needed some renovation... especially some new trains.

I figured no one would buy the Hurricane roller coaster, it was notorious for being one of the roughest roller coasters around here. I am somewhat surprised no one wanted the Dark Ride, but it is good news that they are saving all the other rides. I guess that means that they will be relocating them to another location?

^ They will be moving them to their other properties from what I've heard (not a new park).

So sad, at least I got to ride it before the tear down. Its a shame that they wouldnt sell it for the price of scrap to somebody that wanted it. Instaead just take the buldozer to it.

This is the first CCI coaster to be torn down, right?

I think you're right. Mega Zeph will probably be 2nd since it will probably never reopen if Six Flags has anything to do with it.

To bad. Such a loss. Hurricane certainly wasn't the worst coaster I've ever been on. Seemed like they really quit taking care of it a couple of years ago when they started talking about closing down the park. To bad, as it could have been a very good coaster with a little bit of TLC.

Anyone else getting any pictures besides the couple that the newspaper had?

I've never ridden Hurricane Category 5 myself, but I can imagine that if another park bought it, gave her a good retracking, put some PTCs on, and gave her some love, she'd be a decent ride. I mean, the footprint alone has to be one of its major assets.

Wow - My book with the Pavilion is officially closed. I've only been by the park and walked through the park before I became a coaster enthusiast. Therefore, I've seen both Corkscrew and Hurricane in person and did not ride either. The story is over. I'll never have those rides.

Hurricane COULD have been a good ride, actually it was in 2003 or 2002 (can't remember the last time I was down there before 2006).

The helixes killed you, but the hills were filled with airtime and were very fun even with G trains.

Yeah the first few seasons it was open were great! I think 2005 was the first year that for me there was more negatives than positives on the ride. They had been saying for years that the Pavilion was going to be taken down and it never happened so it is kinda hard to believe that is is really gone.

I rode it one last time June 19, and in the very front seat it really wasn't that bad, and I hate rough coasters, but it wasn't too bad.

Hurricane was a great coaster. I hate to see it go. It was rough, but it was fun. (SFOG could use another wood coaster) It would be cool if SFOG had bought it though. I can't believe that no one would buy it.

By the way; some of the rides from Pavilion will be going to the Pavilion Nostalgia Park at Broadway At The Beach in Myrtle Beach.
