News: Geauga Lake prepares to dismantle Steel Venom

Posted at 5:19 PM EST (2219 GMT)

Mar. 1st, 2007 -- While the last few remaining pieces of the X-Flight roller coaster finally disappeared from the Geauga Lake skyline yesterday, the work crew's task of dismantling tons of steel track is hardly close to being completed. Over the course of the next few months, the Steel Venom roller coaster is next on the line to be dismantled and relocated to another Cedar Fair amusement park.

Park spokesman Bryan Edwards said Geauga Lake could not justify keeping X-Flight and Steel Venom - both expensive to maintain and operate - given the lack of use. Together, the coasters gave roughly 438,000 rides in 2006. By comparison, that's less than the least-ridden adult coaster at Cedar Point in Sandusky.

During a conference call to investors in February to discuss the company's fourth-quarter earnings, Chairman and CEO Dick Kinzel said that Geauga Lake made progress last year but still "fell below expectations." Kinzel said the park needed to reduce overhead costs and make adjustments to reflect visitation trends.

Wow, that really is a low number, but its for the best. So, I wonder which park is getting Steel Venom.

Hopefully, CW will be getting Steel Venom, we desperately need a good ride around here.

Dorney? We already have a "Steel" Force. This would be a unique addition and still not my most desired ride to ride there but it would be welcomed by me. If it would put getting a wooden coaster in jeopardy forget it - get me the wooden coaster.

My guess would be either Carowinds, MI. Adv or Great America.

Carowinds has no lauch coaster, and KD sure doesn't need another one.

I would imagine that if Dorney gets Steel Venom, it will push back or altogether cancel any possibility of a wooden coaster for at least a few years. I rode Steel Venom, and while it is a fun coaster, it's more of a thrill ride in my opinion than a coaster. Give me a wooden coaster any day of the week.

All fingers point to Dorney Park. A request to rezone TWO small parcels of land within a few yards of each other to build something within the height variances of 200 - 220 feet has been submitted by Dorney Park to Allentown City Hall. In addition, the independant power feed that was brought into the park recently is also an indicator.

In a way, I'm glad these two are gone. You can easily be distracted by them as you are driving down SR 43. I know I have been.

I think it would be best if it went to MIA, they really need a thrill type of ride/coaster. ALthough, I am pretty sure it will end up at Dorney.

Wow That is very low ridership. While Dorney seems to be the more likely place I still think CW or MIAdv should get it.

Just trying to get this straight, by CW you mean Carowinds and NOT Canada'a Wonderland, right?
