News: Pavilion rides find new home in new nostalgia park

Posted at 12:39 PM EST (1739 GMT)

Mar. 8th, 2007 -- The Myrtle Beach Pavilion may be gone now, but it won’t be totally forgotten it seems.

Burroughs & Chapin (B&C) announced today that a new mini-park named the Pavilion Nostalgia Park will be installed at Broadway at the Beach (which is owned by B&C), near the movie theaters.

The new park is slated to open next summer and will feature the following rides that were originally located at the Pavilion: the historic carousel, the pirate ship, wave swinger, caterpillar and a few of the kiddie rides.  The German organ will also find a new home at the park.  A retail store and historical section are also planned.

B&C said that the park will be built in phases and they also hope to build a roller coaster at the site in the future.

The Myrtle Beach Pavilion is currently being dismantled; currently the Hurricane roller coaster is coming down.

Burroughs & Chapin hasn't given details or a timetable for when the new development will take shape at the site of the Pavilion.

Oh well, at least some of the rides will stay in Myrtle Beach. This is nothing I'll be going out of my way to go to though.

WTF?!?!? They ripped out an existing park, and then they move some of the rides to a smaller site?!? This doesn't make business sense to me, at least not as a master plan... This is just covering their butt... Goodness.

It's a small bandaid but the damage is done. It's all about the park near the ocean. It won't really raise my spirits.

B&C could've come up with a more logical plan, but they would've actually had to spend their money over a period of time and not stockpile it. Here's an idea:

(First) Keep the Pavilion and fix it up to attract more visitors. Take out some of the old useless rides and put in some new, up-to-date thrill rides. Maybe cram another coaster in there as well.

(Second) Buy NEW rides and put them at the so-called Nostalgia Park. Built it up to be a nice family park, with a couple of thrill rides and add a family coaster (or something like Kentucky Rambler, if that could fit, that suits thrill riders and intermediate riders). With the gigantic crowd already at Broadway at the Beach, this would be a hit without a doubt.

(Third): Fix up the Nascar Speedpark some, just some minor renovations, and a couple of new thrill and family ride additions, maybe another cart track, nothing major (possibly buying some from the defunct. North Myrtle Grand Prix)

(Fourth): Fix up Myrtle Waves some, just some minor renovations to keep it top-notch.

(Later On): After all parks are built up/renovated, B&C could be making 4x the profits instead of just keeping several small parks. Not to mention, during the multi-year process B&C's profits would begin to rise as each task is completed.

Anyone else think that would've been a better idea than just shutting the Pavilion down and using its rides for the better of B&C's other properties?

I think B&C are beyond doing what was best for the place.

All they care about is making a buck and it doesn't matter who they bulldoze over doing it.

^You're right, B&C is looking at the instant money that the Pavilion's sale brought them. They weren't looking at the money that it could've earned for them if they would've just spent some money to fix it up.

How long has B&C owned the Pavilion?

Well at least something will be out there to represent it. And later down the road they want another coaster? So they want to start another park?

I remember a few seasons ago there were rumors FLYING around this area that the Pavilion was going to move to Broadway at the Beach. Maybe the sale of the former site was just the initiative to do it. I think they could have definately done it in a better manner but I guess business is business. I am kind of dissapointed that the Enterprise and Rainbow rides will not be relocated, they were my favorite ones at the park. Great news that the organ will be kept alive! A good thing about the BATB location is that there is possibly more land to expand the park on, where as at its previous location it was definately land locked.

Wow...I wish they could have saved the Haunted Hotel too...but that would have been a real booger to move...at least they're carrying on some of the legacy...

"they also hope to build a roller coaster at the site in the future."

Why Don't they just move the Mad Mouse coaster there, it small, and its a family thrill ride... Isnt that exactly what they'll be looking for?

So they close one area as a park just to build up another area as a park. seems a bit backwards.

Just to clarify... B&C did not sell the Pavilion site, they still own it.

Whatever is going to be built there will be owned by B&C.

Well heres the thing... The original Pavilion was on highly valuable oceanfront property... and the "new" pavilion will be stuck inbetween some other building on property B&C Already owns, and it will attract more people to Broadway at the Beach, will help all the other attractions there. So while I hate the decision, and it plain out sucks, it makes business sense...

and thats all B&C has ever been about.
