News: Six Flags Discovery Kingdom to let guests be animal trainers

Posted at 3:38 PM EDT (1938 GMT)

Mar. 29th, 2007 -- Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (formerly Marine World) has launched a new program that will let animal-loving guests spend a day working with dolphins and elephants - if they have $400 to spend. The program is open to guests over 12 years old.

The trainers-for-a-day will receive a range of information on subjects that include animal education, animal behavior, and veterinary facts. The program also includes hands-on learning, including getting into a pool and giving dolphins hand signals to perform various tricks.

Next thing they will have "Be a coaster operator for a day - $500".

Sheesh, they want to sell you everything at Six Flags these days. lol

This is not actually a bad idea, I just wouldn't do it.

I wouldn't do it but I guess if it helps Six Flags get more money and start to come out of debt it's a good thing.

It's not a bad idea for Six Flags to help get themselves out of debt... but I don't think its going to a popular choice.

Not really surprised there doing this. but I would never do it and I still think most people that would and have the money would use Discovery Cove which is more hands on and you get allot more.

I'm probably going to be the only one to think this is a great idea. You have to look at this from the point of view of lets say a Dolphin fan (Not the Miami Dolphin Football Team)...... This new program sounds a lot like Discovery Cove but here you get an entire day and not 45 mins like at the Sea World owned parks. $400 is not very much to do something that you love and can be a wonderful memory that will last a life time.

BGW fanatic - I would imagine anyone that has 400 to spend won't care about going to Florida to do it. In fact they may prefer the Exclusiveness of DC as opposed to SFDK. as for DC there trainer for a day is as fallows:

Trainer for a Day Package

Discovery Cove is proud to offer a one-of-a-kind package for the ultimate animal lover. The Trainer for a Day package is
all-inclusive along with the following activities:

* Enhanced dolphin interaction and training encounter
* Behind-the-scenes feedings at the coral reef
* Feeding and care of exotic birds in the free-flight aviary
* Behind-the-scenes small-mammal playtime and training session
* Behind-the-scenes animal food preparation and record review
* Behavioral training class (for the animals, not you)

Trainer for a Day 2007 packages

Mar. 12 – Nov. 11 $478

Nov. 12 – Dec. 31 $458

mikey53 - as you can see both are all day and like all attractions at Discovery cove it's limited to smaller groups. There Dolphin Encounter is only $279 during peek season. also Guests as young as 6 can use Discovery cove.

That has to be new then because I have been to Discovery Cove at both Florida and very recently San Diego. The Florida park is limited to just 1000 guest per day in slots of 45 mins. The Discovery Cove experience in Sea World San Diego happens to be the first one made, and smallest of the two but you also get the same 45 min interaction with the dolphins and for a little bit extra you can also get another 45 mins to interact with the Beluga whales at Wild Artic. I did Discovery Cove in Florida 2 summers ago for around $250 and the one in San Diego for around $300 for the Dolphins and the Beluga Whales. Cool that Sea World is doing Trainer for the day though, that really seems like a wonderful experience for some.
