News: Free admission to Six Flags Over Georgia results in chaos

Posted at 4:34 PM EDT (2034 GMT)

Apr. 5th, 2007 -- At approximately 2 am this morning, more than 300 cars had lined up to enter Six Flags Over Georgia for free. The Q-100 radio station that sponsored the event bought out the park for the day as a promotion to its listeners.

However, park officials did not expect a tremendous response that would lead to a massive traffic jam on the freeway and fights in front of the park. Within 15 minutes of opening the gates, the park had reached capacity and staff began turning away hundreds of cars attempting to enter the lot.

Six Flags officials refused admission to countless numbers of teenagers and young adults that began walking down the freeway towards the park in hopes of bypassing traffic in order to secure themselves free admission. For safety reasons, officials said only free admission was given to guests that arrived via automobile.

The trouble didn't end there. Fights and unruly behavior broke out as people clamored for the free tickets handed out by Six Flags staff.

Then at approximately 3:30 am, mobs of people stormed the park's gates in anticipation of gaining entry. "They ran us over," said Jaleesa Prather, who arrived at midnight and slept on the ground in a lot near the park. "We thought we were going to get trampled. We were beat up and punched for those tickets."

Thats a smart idea for advertising the radio station but really they should have expected it to be over crowded; everyone wants to get free things!

I remember the same thing happening years ago at Knott's Berry Farm. They had a 5 cent admission to promote Cinco de Mayo --- and it was insane. People trying to jump park gates after the park was filled to capacity, hoardes of police arrived to contain fights and the crowds. I remember the park issueing a statement saying they would never do a similar promotion ever again due to the response it had with that Cinco de Mayo promo.

This is crazy! I can't beleive this really happened. I wonder who the law suits will be against, because you know they are coming. Everyone has to blame someone, because the fact that people can't just be decent human beings is most likely the park's fault right? It's their job to control all the jerks that want to start fights and chaos? Sometimes, I really just can't stand the human race. lol I feel realyl bad for the people working at the park who had to deal with this nonsense. Is suppose its great that so many people wanted to go though. Maybe it shows that if the parks would lower prices enough they could be packed.

What a fiasco!!

I don't think its the parks fault, what could they do? If the park had reached it's capacity you couldn't just keep letting people in.

I am surprised they did not see this coming. I said days ago that it would be a fiasco and sure enough it was....

Here's the problem ...Why didn't the radio station pre-issue the tickets before the people came the park?...After all, this was Atlanta, a very large city in which right in the area surrounding Six Flags is pretty run down, so the rif-raf is already there. And to assume for them to think this wouldn't happen, being the radio station or the park is absured.

Hilarious. I'm stuck in Pensacola right now and missed it, but I had some friends there. I can't wait to get the report from them.

I kinda had a hunch something like this would happen, but never did I think it would be that bad. LOL!!

My initial thought when I heard admission was free for 2 hours was, "Wow, what a great idea for marketing. Give people a little taste of something they'll want later in the summer." Especially if the park has improved in the off-season, which is likely, this potentially could've been amazing publicity for the park.

Sounds like that great idea blew up in their face. What should've been free advertising for the park ended up in negative news reports, once again labeling the park as a dangerous place to be. Why SFoG, why?

I can't believe the people at SFOG and Q100 were stupid enough to actually do this promotion. I knew this was going to be an absolute disaster once I heard about it. Its only $35 to get in on a regular day if you buy the tickets at Publix.

This reminds me of that one time when there were free laptops being given away at some facility (wasn't it at a racetrack?) a few months ago (maybe last year?) I remember hearing about one lady peeing on herself so she wouldn't lose her place in line.

I agree with Komatz70 the radio station should have given out the tickets prior to the event or had people call in on contest and things and then have them pick the tickets up at the park so people knew in advance whether they would get in or not. Because really this will probably look worse for the park because in the news headlines and articles all they will talk about is the bad things not the positives like the free tickets they will talk about traffic jams, people getting injured, etc.

My parents were going to try and go to it, but they heard on the radio station when they left how bad it was, so they turned around. I think they wanted to go and get a season pass for only $35 each.

Well let's see...... you decide to promote something free in one of the countries largest city in reference to an amusement park in that particular city and you don't forsee a problem happening? That's like Hot 97 in NYC advertising free CD's at Virgin Records just outside of Time Square. This isn't even a business strategy, this is simple common sense. Obviously all parties involved did not use it either. I beleive someone said they should of given out the tickets in advance and I have to agree there. Or at least next time make this promotion for a park that does not have over 20 million people within a 2 hour drive of the place.

They should have given out tickets to people at random. Like have people send in a card to enter, then they would mail the tickets out.

No, let's create mass chaos in ATL. Duh!

One year Carowinds offered Season Pass Holders up to 6 free tickets to bring their friends and family the last day of the year. It was slam full in the park. It took an hour to ride Top Gun!

That's sad and really poor planning on both parts. Honestly I thought that this would have really been good for the good ole Six Flags O G, but this was a very large city from a very popular radio station so it was kinda doomed from the start.

Ugh. I went to six flags today, and witnessed some fights. I am so sick of atlanta and the fighting wannabe gang mentality. Such a joke...

This is just a reminder of why I didn't bother buying a pass this year. All the people in the surrounding areas use SFOG as a day care service for their obnoxious kids and teens.

I thought it was officially illegal now everywhere. Parents were getting in trouble for leaving kids under 16 unsupervised at these parks. I remember last year incidents at Magic Mountain and Knott's berry Farm before the summer season even started, parents where being given citations for there children being un-supervised and it was on the news here in San Diego. Most of the parents thought that it was ridiculous but I thought it was great.
