News: Disneyland builds coalition to block housing

Posted at 11:14 PM EDT (0314 GMT)

Apr. 27th, 2007 -- The debate over a move to build 1,500 condos in the special resort district around the Disneyland Resort escalated this week when the Anaheim City Council voted 3-2 to approve a zoning change that would permit the condos to be built. On Thursday, Disney and a coalition of local business and politicians, including Anaheim's mayor, announced a petition drive for a referendum to reverse the decision.

Proponents of the project, which would include about 225 low-income units, say that the development is needed to house the workers who otherwise could not afford to live near the park. Disney charges that changing the zoning in the tourist-only resort district will "destroy" the area.

Under the referendum, all development in the resort district would be frozen until February of 2008. The coalition is also working on an initiative that would require a vote on all housing projects within the resort district. In addition, Disney has filed suit against the city over the zoning change.

Wow Disney is trying to keep housing out that would house there own workers. But then again being close to the park would make it look more junkie when the tourist come in.

That's the big thing. Most condos especially those with some intended for low income look well average. it also changes the style of the area allot. so I can see why there doing it. also once you have people living in an area like this your just asking for trouble.
