News: Paramount looking into South Korean theme park

Posted at 10:57 PM EDT (0257 GMT)

May. 10th, 2007 -- Paramount Pictures announced today that it intends to construct a theme park in the South Korean city of Inchon. The park would be built along with the General Motors affiliate Daewoo, which would raise the estimated $1 billion to construct the park. The park would also be located on a 124-acre plot of land owned by Daewoo.

The attraction would include rides, a 300-room hotel, a water park, and shopping malls. Construction would begin this year and would be completed by 2014, although the park would be open for visitors as early as 2009.

The move would make Paramount the first foreign entertainment group to operate a park in South Korea, although other companies are considering doing so.

^ I was thinking the same thing. They just ditched all the North American parks, so why are they looking into this?

I didn't trust the Paramount end into this either since they gave up on us in the US. I do believe in the affluence of the South Korean people though. Actually I took a tour at this GM Daewoo plant site last month. The city is so built up I'm surprised this land is available. This plant is not out in the country like the Hyundai plant is. Then again their urban planning over the region amazed me as well so I wouldn't doubt on the design of the park either. I'd really like to go back to Incheon to see the changes in the coming years. It's the sister city of Philadelphia - about that size. They are serious about their growth in housing, the international business/trade zone, new business buildings and further infrastructure in Incheon. The construction crane seems to be the official bird of Korea. There is no kidding around with the 2014 Asian Games coming to Incheon. It is the gateway to South Korea.

What?! This is so random! They sold their US parks just last season...and now they want to build a BILLION dollar park?

And what in the world does Daewoo have to do with this? Why would they want to get in on it...they make cars! This seems so random to me!

Hehe Korea is something to behold. Companies like Samsung, Hyundai, Lotte, LG are so multifaceted, diversified into subsidiaries like GE here in the US it is not a surprise to me that Daewoo wants to be involved with this. For Example; Hyundai is into cars, shipping, oil, construction vehicles, apartment buildings, department stores. Samsung owns Everland. Lotte is like our Hershey. They have their own department store too. Few companies control a lot in Korea. I saw a Daewoo tv and a Kia bicycle years ago. I knew something was up. I'm surprised perhaps with the balance of control GM has over Daewoo. It sure doesn't fit into an American GM model where it's all about the cars and very pressing issues to deal with. That's Korea for you.

What's that old saying?, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence." Only in this case you can replace "fence" with "ocean." Just the other day, I saw a goat sticking his head through the fence to graze on the other side.

Sell all of them to just build one. I guess they want just one instead of 5.

CBS sold the old Paramount Parks parks, not Paramount/Viacom. When the Viacom company split CBS got the parks.

That seems rather strange. So why would Paramount give up their Parks to CBS during the split? Seems like Paramount wasn't interested in the USA Parks in the first place if they let them go to CBS. Then it turns out CBS wasn't interested in the Parks either so they sold them to CEDAR FAIR. The question still remains: Why did CBS not want the Paramount Parks and why did Paramount let CBS have them? I guess the answer is, "Follow the money trail".

But this does raise another question...one that maybe only the big execs can answer. If I recall correctly, it was known pretty early that CBS didnt want the parks. So it makes me wonder why they would send the park half to CBS if they had no real interest in keeping them. If the flip of the side of the company wanted the parks...why not assign the park division to the side that wanted it.

It is kind of like saying...ok, Peanut Butter, you want the jelly, and the bread does not want the jelly alone, so we will send the jelly to the bread. The bread sells the jelly. Peanut Butter goes out and gets Jam instead. Maybe I just dont completely grasp it, but I would have thought overall...that it was a huge waste of time (for the parks, not the end result) to split it somewhere it wasnt wanted, and then sell it only to have the other half go and get/start a new one.

Daewoo are behind the park, not Paramount. You can guarantee that they approached Disney and Universal to develop the park, but were rejected by both because it wasn't conducive to their strategy for the Asian market, and only then did they approach Paramount.

I would expect that Paramount probably won't be too involved on a design or management level, but rather will be profiting from licensing and will be involved only to ensure that the image projected by attractions and the park as a whole is in line with their own.

I guess they already miss the Paramount Parks. Strange that they sell their existing parks and already want to look at building another.

It's probably like what Rich pointed out.

The fate to get rid of the parks was probably already there by the time Viacom split into its different divisions. It just had to put the parks somewhere until they were sold.

Here's my theory. Paramount was evidently still interested in the amusement park industry. But if they sold the Paramount Parks to Cedar Fair, Cedar Fair would probably have had them sign a contract that they, Paramount, would not enter into the amusement park industry for several years. So to get around that problem, Paramount gave the Parks to CBS, who could then sell them, permitting Paramount to still stay in the amusement park business. Thank makes sense, doesn't it? If you bought a hamburger stand from a fellow, you wouldn't want this same fellow to open up a new hamburger stand across the street and compete with you, now would you? Same goes here. I guess all those business subjects I took in college finally paid off. Makes you understand how business ticks.
