News: Six riders injured on rapids ride at Animal Kingdom

Posted at 6:23 PM EDT (2223 GMT)

May. 29th, 2007 -- During an evacuation of the Kali River Rapids ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom, a platform malfunctioned and caused injury to several riders. Five guests and one Disney employee were injured. The Disney employee was reported to have a bone fracture, other guests had minor injuries such as bruises, cuts and neck and back pain.

One of the ride's sensors caused the backup of rafts and eventually required the evacuation. The ride remained closed till about 4:15 P.M. after further inspection. The safety platform that malfunctioned had disengaged and slid off its normal operating sequence.

Wait, did the spinning platform where you load just suddenly stop?

The story is kinda vague, it was a "Emergency Unloading Platform" I believe that malfunctioned.

If you read the Orlando Sentinel article it says it was an evacuation platform on an incline. The only incline on the ride would have to be the lift. This leads me to believe it was a platform that they would put into place in the event of an evacuation similair to the moving platforms on an inverted coaster's lift. The platform came lose and slid a bit, most likely jostling the guests and employee that were standing on it.

Ive seen that ride 2 times and I can't imagine how that system failed. You would think they would have a backup evacuation system, you know?
