Posted at 7:18 PM EDT (2318 GMT)

Jun. 21st, 2007 -- A 13-year-old girl sustained injuries during an accident on Superman - Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom at around 4:45pm. Louisville Metro Police confirmed that the girl's feet had been severed at the ankle. Witnesses claim that they saw a cable from the ride hit the child while the passengers were on their way down during Superman - Tower of Powers free fall.

Superman - Tower of Power opened at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in 1995. The ride was built buy Intamin AG and was their first Giant Drop installation. It is 177 feet tall with a 157 foot free fall that reaches speeds of 54 miles per hour. Superman - Tower of Power was formerly named Hellevator.

What cable? The cable that pulls the cars to the top of the tower?

It lives up to the former Hellevator name :(

I almost want to get sick from the thought. :(

Seems all the drop towers that they built will be closed till they find out what happen unless they dont do that anymore. It sucks for the girl though. Hope she will be ok. It must be a new thing on the ride for food to fall 157 feet. Or is that a typo?

This is horrible. I hear of accidents all the time on and off rides but with one of the interviews from a witness actually made me utterly sad because you could hear the pain and sorrow in her voice.

If this turns out to be the parks fault...which I expect it to be, I would sue for sure. This is total negligence on their part.

What is up this week with crazy stuff going on in parks?

This came to me as such a surprise, and Im still shocjed a day later that this incident stil occured. I have riden that ride on several occasions, and never once has a malfunction like this happened before. However, the ride itself has a history of bad maintanance problems, and usually runs with two of its four sides running. I dont know if Ill ride this ride again, although I probally will.

The question I have is how did the wire get to her feet? On those Intamin drop towers, the wire that pulls the cars up is above the vehicle.

I wonder if the cable was past its life span. Or if maintenance pulled a Kingda Ka and wrote it off as OK without checking it.

Hello all. im in ky and me and my family have had season passes to KK for at least 5 years. it is a good park for kids as the rides arent too big. the biggest ride they have is Chang, a standing coaster. it makes me grin that my kids get such a kick out of KK. (for me, cedar point is nice).
anyway, my kids have ridden everything since they were tall enough to pass the height marker, they have never been scared to ride anything at KK.
well, this season my 9yr old has sat out everytime when her brother and sister ride the superman tower of power (btw, thats a bad name for a ride). i asked her why and she told me that she had a dream that it hurt/killed someone so she wasnt going to ride it ever again. just a coincidence, but still weird.
i can also speak on the maintenance at KK. i have seen in my experience, shotty work at best on every ride. someone had described it as a carnival type enviroment for ride maintainance. i have to agree. most of the time they just shut rides down and wait weeks for someone to fix them. there is usually a list of rides in the front of the park that are closed. however this year, that list isnt out front anymore. i guess people were getting angry at seeing all the ride closures. on a sidenote, KK has always operated at a loss, so i can understand the lack of enthusiam to maintain this park.
