News: Canada's Wonderland prepares for a Behemoth

Posted at 8:30 AM EDT (1230 GMT)

Aug. 27th, 2007 -- Via Press Release: Vaughan, Ontario - Canada's Wonderland prepares to change the landscape for thrill seekers in 2008, with the addition of Canada's Biggest, Fastest and Tallest roller coaster - Behemoth. Following 18 months of planning and construction, Behemoth will premiere at Canada’s Wonderland in May 2008.

At over 5,300 feet (1,616m) in length, Behemoth sets the stage for thrills with a climb to a height of 230 feet (70.1m), followed by an adrenaline pumping 85 degree drop with speeds reaching 125 kilometers per hour in 3.9 seconds. The coaster will then take riders through the ultimate coaster experience with high speed twists and turns, including double banked flat loops (horizontal loops) and eight extreme drops. Intensifying the action packed adventure, the ride will feature prototype open-air seating that will allow all riders to experience an unobstructed view of all the thrills and excitement on one of North America's best coasters.

"Behemoth will be the biggest investment in Canada's Wonderland's 27 year history at approximately $26 million dollars," said Raffi Kaprelyan, Vice President and General Manager, Canada’s Wonderland. "With the addition of Behemoth, we wanted to compliment our already impressive line-up of more than 200 rides, shows and attractions with a world class roller coaster that will showcase Wonderland as one of the premier amusement parks in our industry."

Behemoth will be the 15th roller coaster at Canada’s Wonderland. Construction is currently underway, but those who cannot wait until spring may take a virtual ride on Behemoth at canadaswonderland.com. Visitors to canadaswonderland.com may also access exclusive Behemoth updates and features, like virtual renderings, ride statistics and online fun.

Behemoth was designed by Bolliger & Mabillard of Monthey, Switzerland, a recognized industry leader in roller coaster development.

Canada's Wonderland is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly traded partnership that is listed for trading on The New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "FUN." In addition to Canada's Wonderland, Cedar Fair owns and operates eleven other amusement parks, five water parks, one indoor water park resort, and six hotels. Cedar Fair also owns and operates Star Trek: The Experience, an interactive adventure located in Las Vegas, and operates the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy, California under a management contract.

Those trains look interesting...is this the first B&M that isn't four abreast?

^^ It is 4 across, it's just that the outside seats are moved out sorta like stadium seating.

But this is the first train like that.

An 85-degree drop? Wow. The animation makes it look like there are brakes on each of the three airtime hills before the block brake. I hope that's not true at all.

But this looks like a really cool layout. It's good to know B&M can at least still make hypers. Good trains too.

It's a good market to test the trains. It's not going to CP or SFGADV where 4 abreast would definitely be needed. I just hope people aren't confused like I somewhat was on Deja Vu. The flash animation we saw now made more sense since the turnaround is the second element therefore a big hill could be next to the lift. I think I'll still like NITRO's second half more than this. The 85 degree drop is exciting to here.

This looks like an amazing ride. I think it will be up there with rides like Nitro, Apollos Chariott, and Raging Bull. I like the looks of the hammerhead(ish) turnaround. The animation did depict trims on some of the hills, but they do not effect the train at all on Nitro.

The cars look like Vekoma giant inverted boomerangs. I saw the brakes too, but it didn't look like it slowed down the train at all. They might be there as a "just in case" measure.

^ The thing to keep in mind is that the animations aren't always that accurate.

I think someone said that Goliath (South)'s animation made it look really slow, and it's not. It's more intense than Apollo's Chariot to me even though it's 3mph slower.

I'm glad to see Wonderland FINALLY get on board with a NEW coaster as opposed to a hodge podge of cloned ones. They were starting to remind me of Astroworld. I always saw this amusement park as a place with so much potential. With the addition of this new coaster, I am now motivated to go there, because it looks like its' going to be pretty awesome.

I'll be the first to say that this coaster doesn't look that impressive at all...I mean, it pretty much has all the same elements as Nitro except in a different layout. Not to mention that the name and logo of the coaster is so similar to Goliath's it's not even funny. Even with the new trains, the 85 degree drop, etc. I just don't think this is going to be that great of a coaster.

^^It does favor Nitro a lot I will be the first to admit that. 230 feet, over a mile long and the angle of descent is close, but not the same. Differences are Nitro is in an L shape, while this is an out and back. The hammer head on Nitro seems a bit longer. But regardless I still think this is going to be a great ride. If it's anything like Nitro in riding, people won't be disappointed.

Does anyone have a theory as to why B&M would've changed the style of seating? I don't see how making staggering the 4 across does anything for the ride. I'm glad the capacity will still be the same though.

The staggering of the seats now means that every seat is basically an outside seat, where as with the other design, you had two outer seats and two inner seats, with the inner ones having much less of a view, unless you were on the front row.

^Plus, I'm sure this seating design gives people more maneuverability, so they can raise thier arms without elbowing or hitting the person sitting next to them. Im sure their may be other advantages and benefits of this arrangement. However, wouldnt this limit the seating capacity for each train?

^ It looks like they had to take one row off, it's only an 8 row train. But they are getting 3 trains though.

Awesome looking coaster. 85 degree drop, 77mph, 230 feet tall, 5300 feet long, $26 million... it fits every area of what I like in a coaster (massive, and expensive, lol).
