News: The ride is over at Geauga Lake

Posted at 11:58 PM EDT (0358 GMT)

Sep. 21st, 2007 -- Geauga Lake’s coasters and amusement rides won’t be back for 2008, parent company Cedar Fair announced Friday afternoon.

“The market demand simply isn’t there to support the park in its current structure,” Cedar Fair spokeswoman Stacy Frole said. She said Wildwater Kingdom, the $25 million water park Cedar Fair built on the south side of the lake, “has really been the most popular attraction at Geauga Lake. We believe that’s where the property is going to succeed — as a water park.”

Cedar Fair CEO Dick Kinzel said in a statement: “Geauga Lake’s Wildwater Kingdom has been recognized as one of the finest water parks in the country. Since its opening in 2005, Wildwater Kingdom has been the park’s highest-rated attribute.”

The future of the coasters and other rides at the 119-year-old amusement park, including the classic Big Dipper wooden coaster, is uncertain

“Our planning and design department is going through and analyzing what the best use for all of our assets are,” Ms. Frole said. “Will some rides be located to other (Cedar Fair) parks? Yes.” She would not specify which rides might be going to which other Cedar Fair properties.

Mr. Kinzel and Cedar Fair chief operating officer Jack Falfas shared the news with employees at Geauga Lake in person. Park general manager Bill Spehn is expected to retain his position, according to Ms. Frole.

Not a big shock, but I still don't like to see this for a park this old.

I'm glad I visited there for the first time in June. I thought it was a nice little park.

Yeah, this definitely isn't surprising at all. Even in the middle of the summer on a weekend, this park was not that crowded at all. Dominator never had all three trains in service, nor was the ride ever full. So that said a lot about the park. I wonder what they're going to do with the rides, because they have some fairly new rides sitting there. Does suck that such an old park will be closed though.

I was in May for a first time visit. I'm actually glad I took extra time out of the Cedar Point portion of my visit that day to spend it at Geauga Lake. It was the first day of this season.

What a brick wall. Too surprised to give a better answer.

Kinzel now: "The rollercoaster people can go to Cedar Point, the waterpark people can go to Geauga Lake"

Kinzel 2008: "The rollercoaster people can go to Cedar Point, the waterpark people can go to Soak City"

I am shocked and upset! GL was a great family park and that is what CF said they were building. What a downward spiral this park has traveled from 2001 to today...

I'm mostly concerned for Big Dipper... :-/ If that ride gets destroyed I'll be incredibly upset.

Moving all the rides to a closed status in the database is a sad duty.

I wonder if they will even call the place Geauga Lake next year???

This is sad. Geauga Lake was a very nice little park. I hope they can survive as just a waterpark.

^I believe the name will be Geauga Lake's Wildwater Kingdom.

Wow! I didn't see this one coming! Just kidding.

I really wonder what'll happen to Big Dipper. I hope it's not scrapped. It's a classic and a fun ride to boot.

Oh well. It happens, Not like the park was going to grow into a super park like Cedar Point.

Something was said about the status of Big Dipper. Couldn't they keep that and a select number of smaller rides operating while they concentrate on the water park? After all, there is something similar to that at Wyandot Lake (near the Columbus Zoo).

This was a big shock, from the historical part. I knew it was coming, sadly.

Sea World is where Wildwater Kingdom is... They just put WWK logos over the SeaWorld facia.

^^ lol no kidding Coasterfreak. Think MIA would much prefer their floorless, than that VERY rough SLC. But nothing is set in stone on where the rides are going to though.
