News: Kings Dominion adds Dominator for 2008

Posted at 2:02 PM EDT (1802 GMT)

Oct. 23rd, 2007 -- DOSWELL, VA - Kings Dominion is set to add "Dominator" to its coaster lineup for 2008.  This B&M-designed floorless coaster is the longest of its kind in the world and was formerly operated at Cedar Fair's "Geauga Lake."  This is the latest asset-relocation since Cedar Fair's announcement of Geagua Lake's new waterpark-only direction.

Here's the park's press release in its entirety:

KINGS DOMINION, Virginia – Kings Dominion will soar to new heights in 2008 with the introduction of its 14th roller coaster, Dominator. Debuting in late spring, this innovative 4,210-foot steel coaster will be the longest floorless coaster in the world and have the tallest roller coaster loop.

Riders will board the coaster on the east side of International Street, just behind the park’s Berserker ride. Once seated, guests begin their journey with a short, twisted U-turn and climb the 161 foot-tall lift hill. After the 32 passenger train crests the top of the lift, riders are sent flying down a 157 foot drop, eventually speeding into the gut-wrenching, record-breaking vertical loop, which stands 135 feet tall. Four additional inversions will follow during Dominator’s two minute and six second, adrenaline pumping experience.

“Kings Dominion is known for having one of the country’s widest varieties of roller coasters,” said Pat Jones, Kings Dominion’s vice president and general manager. “Dominator is the perfect definition of the word “thrill” and reflects our commitment to combining one-of-a-kind attractions with fantastic family entertainment. We’re looking for some real thrill seekers who are up for the challenge and ready to take total control their ride experience.”

Dominator joins a portfolio of 13 industry-leading roller coasters including Volcano, The Blast Coaster, Flight of Fear (the world’s first coaster with LIM launch technology), Anaconda, The Grizzly and the Rebel Yell.

Kings Dominion will open in 2008 for weekend operation on Saturday, March 22. Daily operation begins Saturday, May 24. Water Works Water Park opens Saturday, May 24. For more information, guests can call the park at (804) 876-5000 or visit online at www.kingsdominion.com

So much for Dominator at Great America...Now I'm all for selling Great America, that parks 100% sucks and I thought Dominator would've been a great move to try and help improve it, but guess that wasn't on Cedar Fair's agenda.

^ Yeah, I saw that and fixed it.

There's tons of pics floating around the net already of the track in the parking lot of the park.

This is a great addition to KD which was starting to get a bit bland in the coaster department, with the exclusion of Grizzly, Volcano and Flight of Fear of course.

I didn't expect it to come to Carowinds, but I was hoping for it anyway.

I could care less about the name, its a good coaster that will fit in really well at KD. The capacity will be superb and that should really help out.

Kings Dominion...Dominator... they sound alike, so I think that's why they kept the name. But they could just be cheap. lol

Will they be painting the coaster at least? It looked like it had seen better days at Geauga Lake. I think a fresh paint job would do that a world of good at this point.

The pics I have seen make it look kinda yuck and rusted.

Seriously, why does it really matter if they don't change the name, it's still a good name for a coaster so why not keep it. This is great for the park and its frequent park goers.

They should've renamed it "Dominionator"

I agree on the Dominionator. Great America will still be a C-B grade park. I know someone here can rest easy now that he'll get his Dominator.

I wanna say it's possibly forshadowing something, yet it's not. If Great America isn't getting anything big again, and is currently in talks of possibly being sold, perhaps it's another clue that its demise is on the way, however, they are getting a Top Spin next season, so that contradicts the original theory.

And yes, I thought Dominator fits pretty well to because of the Dominion, although I do hope it gets a paint job...has there ever actually been a coaster relocated where it wasn't repainted?

Great America did not receive Dominator because legally the park can't. The park has height restrictions due to its proximity to the San Jose airport.

I had no idea that Dominator was the longest floorless coaster. I really like Dominator layout so I am interested to ride it. I also had no idea that is had the tallest loop. Good info.

Hopefully it will be up and running for my trip! I have seen it on RCDB and have wanted to try it out for some time now.

Hopefully the trains receiver some much deserved overall. One thing I've noticed since Geauga Lake was taken over by Cedar Fair is they let that coaster turn to crap. Two seasons ago I rode it and it was probably the roughest the ride has been ever, a lot rougher than a B&M should be. But knowing Cedar Fair, they won't. Hell, they couldn't even get new padding for the trains when they took over and just cut out the Batman symbol in the seats. Really good indication of how much they cared about that coasters.

The longest floorless, yet not even a g-roll? The different layout is pretty cool but it was to swing the ride all the way around to Geauga's constraints there.

It's funny. Relocating a B&M never seems to really work as many of them configure to the specific terrains of their original parks. Another reason why only 2 B&M's have been relocated.

I think dominator is going to be a great addition to the park's lineup. KD was in need of not only a B&M but a good capacity ride. Wow a line at KD that will actually move rather fast, now thats hard to believe.

Cedar Fair appears to have some sort of strategy in not renaming these coasters from GL. Either that, or they're just lazy.

Well this is not a surprise at all. Everyone knew it would go to KD. And KD was in dire need of a new coaster too. The news release says they have, "13 industry leading roller coasters". My one question is where? You have FOF and Volcano: TBC, but nothing else worth mentioning at all. Dominator is a nice solid floorless coaster. Wasn't my favorite one, but I still recommend it regardless. And unlike GL, KD will fill the seats on that ride to capacity. Everytime I went to GL, they would run no more than two trains and even that was overkill. I'm pretty sure they will repaint it prior to installation too, because like everyone else has said, Dominator has seen better days.
