News: X becomes X2 in 2008

Posted at 12:02 PM EDT (1602 GMT)

Nov. 2nd, 2007 -- Via Press Release:

Yesterday, Six Flags Magic Mountain announced its new capital plans for the 2008  operating season.  The world's leading thrill park unveiled a lineup that includes  an impressive new twist on the park's most popular, state-of-the-art coaster, X2 — adding an innovative and totally immersive sight and sound experience —  elevating the world's first four-dimensional roller coaster into the 5th dimension to become X2.  Also, for the littlest thrill seekers, the world-famous Thomas the Tank EngineTM pulls into the newly-created children's play area, Thomas TownSM.

"X2 and Thomas Town are part of a very exciting season we have planned for 2008, as we continue our mission of making Six Flags synonymous with an  entertainment experience that delivers thrills for the entire family," said Jay Thomas, Six Flags Magic Mountain Park President.  "For our more adventurous  guests, we will take our one-of-a-kind coaster, X, and deliver a whole new  extreme experience with X2, while young children and their parents can spend quality time together in our new Thomas Town.   Six Flags Magic Mountain has been thrilling guests and making family memories for over 36 years and our new  additions will help us continue to do so for years to come!"

X LAUNCHES INTO A NEW GALAXY, BECOMING X2

X, the world's first 4th dimensional thrill ride, is once again pushing all limits and taking extreme to the next level in 2008.  This $10 million investment  features completely redesigned, sleeker trains and introduces all-new, innovative  state-of-the-art visual, audio and sensory effects, X will move from the 4th dimension to the 5th and become X2!

"Since it opened in 2002, X, with its 360° rotating seats and head-first, face  down drops, has been one of the most popular thrill rides on the planet," stated Jay Thomas, Six Flags Magic Mountain Park President.  "With the redesign, X2 will take even the most daring riders on a journey to a unique and unchartered  dimension of extreme only Six Flags Magic Mountain can deliver."

Unlike traditional coasters where trains only parallel the track, X sends riders  screaming around its 3,600-foot maze of steel track aboard massive wing-shaped  trains where the seats extend off the track to the sides of the vehicle allowing  them to independently rotate guests head over heels, forward and backward  creating a one-of-a-kind "don't know what to expect next" sensation.  X2 launches the extreme thrills of X into a new dimension with the addition of a  unique new tunnel and light experience that changes with every ride.   X2 is one of 14 coasters at Six Flags Magic Mountain — Southern California's leader
in thrills!

In order for the transformation to take place, X will close in late 2007, and X2 will launch in spring 2008.

I can see the trains that are totally needed as a rehab. But, the lighting and sound effects and tunnel...is that really necessary enough part of the ride to be effect to be in the so-called 5th dimension?

Not trying to start anything, just think money can be spent elsewhere in the park instead of dressing up a ride that already exists as a part of the park anyway. I mean the GP will look at it and go, OK....what's with X2 now? LOL I can see it now....

^Hmm. I actually wish they would turn a couple cars to run backwards, whether its full time or temporarily. It sounds like a fun experience. If they really wanted to they could just use the spare Astroworld car sitting in the lot by Scream.

Anyhoo. The X2 article was a bit late on thrillnetwork, but anyhoo, yeah I guess I can't wait to see the changes start at Magic Mountain...any of them.

The floorless trains ruin the feeling of a suspended coaster. I've ridden both. They already have Batman The Ride and they don't need another version that is lame.

The name is actually X Two. Not squared or to the power of.

"The extreme to the 2nd power" is the tagline, but the park is calling it X 2.

I just wouldn't take it all so seriously. The 2 is to imply the upgrade in trains and hopefully ride quality. The talk is all gusto to help market the ride as updated. We know it's the 4th dimension. It will still have its bark and luster, we just hope it's better for maintenance and the whole ride experience. Somewhere on the ride will be a tunnel. If it changes all the time I wouldn't be surprised if it was a LED effect. It would be cool if it was on the lift. You wouldn't have to stare at the sun. The track is not changing so get with it.

Do they really hope to accomplish anything with re-doing the ride so to speak? I mean from what I've heard that ride has had a lot of mechanical problems in the past, and wouldn't re-doing it increase the possibility of more problems?

Not that it really matters, if you go to Magic Mountain's website and read the press release, it does have it as "X Squared" not X Two... when I put it into our site, it won't do the little 2 up a the top of X to indicate squared.

So, according to their press release it's "X Squared" not "X Two"

Well then tell the folks at Six Flags to stop calling it X 2. The press release was the only place where it appeared that way. X 2 makes more sense than X squared, so why don't we join together and force them to call it that as well.

Isn't this supposed to be like a movie sequel? They don't call Spiderman 2, Spiderman Squared.

I hope not Sequels are normally a pail comparison to the original!!

Personally I think it's a bad move. Not the trains but the Full rehab. The train are lily only 4-5 Million of the whole rehab. They could like Kate said spend that money on better things.

There was a more recent update to the story - it can be found @ latimes.com. There is a schematic showing the new trains and talking about the improvement - including the amount of weight shaved off each train - give it a look.
