News: Beijing to build world's tallest Ferris wheel

Posted at 2:16 PM EST (1916 GMT)

Nov. 6th, 2007 -- The Great Wall of China will soon no longer be the only giant in the land. Beijing is building a Ferris wheel taller than the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer.

The Great Wheel of China will tower at 682 ft when finished in 2009, and become the tallest and largest Ferris wheel in the world.

The wheel will have 48 air-conditioned cabins, each with the ability to carry up to 40 passengers.  Officials say that on a good day, riders will be able to see the Great Wall from the ride.

“The wheel will stand in eastern Beijing's Chaoyang Park, where beach volleyball events will take place at next year's Olympics, and have far greater capacity than the London Eye”, an official said.

They should build a coaster on the side of it like TTD. LOL

Then they could have the tallest coaster and Ferris wheel.

I wonder what Mr. Ferris would think of this thing.

Honestly what's the point? It seems to be a competition of who has the bigger ferris wheel. You know, pretty soon, they're going to be so high, nobody will ride them. I'm pretty sure, some people already won't. Besides claiming to have the largest ferris wheel (until a bigger one is built) there's really nothing special.

Wow. I am stunned at the size of this thing. I would love to ride one of the giant ferris wheels. Hopefully I will get to at some point down the road.

I wouldn't mind riding that. I can see businesses renting out pods or carriages for dinners or events... awesome!

^Dinner on a ferris wheel. Great idea. I could see a permanent resteraunt being added to some of the carriages. I'd like to eat there.

Ok. Now what? Sitting in an air-conditioned car? I'll go to the Empire State Building instead.

The worlds tallest ferris wheel? Ummm, I see nothing to brag about on this thing. One of the slowest amusment park rides known to man and they want to make it the biggest. Sure you can get a nice view more than likely, but thats what skyscrapers are for. I honestly don't see the point.

It's just like every coaster that's the "biggest, tallest, fastest, etc". It's just a marketing tool.

It doesn't neccesarily make it a better ride.

Higher than Kingda Ka - wow. Both are still shorter than the Eiffel Tower now.

That's very large to say the least. I think I would be more afraid to ride this than any coaster I know of. HUGE.
