News: Bloomberg unveils new plans for Coney Island

Posted at 8:11 AM EST (1311 GMT)

Nov. 13th, 2007 -- Last week Mayor Bloomberg of New York, announced plans to revitalize and revamp Coney Island.

Coney Island would become the largest urban amusement park in America and include about 4,500 new apartments and lots of new retail as well.

The goal is to turn around the area, which has become rundown over the years into a year-round attraction.

Renderings show the new park would incorporate the Cyclone coaster as well as the famous Wonder Wheel.  It would also include a new, looping steel coaster as well as a giant flat ride that appears to be one of the giant swing rides that have started popping up at American fairs and have been in European parks for several years.

The park property at the base of the Wonder Wheel would also include an ice skating/roller skating rink.

The city still has a lot of work before groundbreaking can happen, including rezoning and possible land purchases.

The city hopes to break ground in 2009 and that the overall project would take 10 to 20 years to complete.

For more information and to view the artist renderings, visit the New York Post.

NYC would be really smart to partner with Tivoli Gardens if they continue to express interest in Coney Island when it comes time to renovate the area.

Is a "giant swing ride" the Fabbri Booster type thing?

20 years to complete? Even for that amount of construction, that seems like quite a feat.

I hope this comes to fruition. Coney Island could possibly see its glory return.

I hope the coaster is a B & M or an Intamin.

I had made mention of this in a thread devoted to this before it became a news item. I work practically up the block from the Coney Island Cyclone. To have a B & M or an Intamin down the block from my job (Assistant Principal in a High School) would be simply amazing, and would make for some fun lunch breaks when the weather is warm.

^ I totally agree. Although I've never gotten to Coney Island, I always have a special place in my heart for what places/parks like this did for the industry. They are the reason we have Six Flags, Disney and Cedar Fair.

I'd love to see the place get back to being a destination like it was the turn of the last century.

And again, thanks for the story.

^ You're welcome.

I have never seen Coney Island when it was in its heyday, but I have seen plenty of pictures. Also, my grandfather used to tell me what it was like. It must have been truly incredible when it was in its heyday.

If anyone was to see what it looks like now, you would all be like, "What the hell is this?" Let's all hope Coney Island gets the attention it deserves. It is definitely one of the reasons why we have our major theme park players today.

The Cyclone still packs a punch. They keep it in pretty good shape. The Wonder Wheel is a landmark. And, we have the Brooklyn Cyclones playing at Keyspan Park. The boardwalk has seen improvements, and so has the beach. Nathan's is an institution. This renovation would do wonders for the area. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.
