News: ACE tries to save Big Dipper

Posted at 10:08 AM EST (1508 GMT)

Nov. 14th, 2007 -- There may still be a glimmer of hope for the Big Dipper at Geauga Lake.

The American Coaster Enthusiasts or ACE as most know them, is attempting to preserve the 1925, John Miller-built wooden coaster.  The John Miller classic is only one of 13 left in the world today.

ACE hopes to find a developer that would build a mixed-use development around the coaster that would include retail and restaurants.

Sources though state that Cedar Fair has Big Dipper as well as the other two wooden coasters at Geauga Lake (Raging Wolf Bobs and The Villain) listed for sale.

Richard Munch with ACE said he believes Cedar Fair officials want to sell the property, and historical preservation is not a part of their master plan.

"This all came about pretty quickly," he said. "I think Cedar Fair wants to get out of the business."

Munch is also a board member for the National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives, which was founded in 1992. If the organization can work with a developer in preserving the ride and the land around it, Munch said the group would be interested in turning Geauga Lake into the museum's base. The organization has two warehouses filled with remnants of rides of the past. About 50 coaster trains from 35 different coasters are in storage waiting for a permanent home.

In September, Cedar Fair announced it was shutting down the amusement park side of Geauga Lake because of low ticket sales. The company plans to concentrate exclusively on waterpark operations next year. The waterpark will open May 24 for the 2008 season.

If the ride won't be purchased, hopefully this will work out...

Wes, I'm glad you got a response- I tried to find out what ACE was doing, and they never got back to me. Must have been busy at a buffet.

I'd love to see the coaster museum on GL's old land. It would be a great way to keep the carousel and at least the Big Dipper running. Plus, it might draw in some more tourism to the area.

This is how the Giant Dipper in San Diego, CA was saved. I hope they can make it happen.

Does anyone know if the carousel still has a band organ? Without the band organ all that's left is wooden horses, if they still have the wooden horses. And if the horses aren't wooden, they might as well scrap that ride also.

Also I applaud ACE's efforts to save the Big Dipper but I don't see much hope. The best thing ACE can do is get permission from Cedar Fair to take measurements of every hill on the Big Dipper and make a blueprint of the ride just in case an amusement park may want to rebuild it. I'm sure that there are no original blueprints on the Big Dipper because of the age of the coaster.

There has been Rumors of the Carousel Going to another CF park. As for Big Dipper if they are going to build the museum there it might not be a bad idea. having an operational ACE Coaster Classic Coaster woudl add a lot to the attraction. Right now even as a coaster enthusiasts the coaster siting by itself in OH isn't going to make my must see list.

The 3 coasters are up for Sale. They are actually very cheap. 100,000 for Big Dipper and 150 for the other 2. Thing it dismantling, moving and reassembly is around 2-2.5 million. that's not Including group work and footers. The "New Whalom Park Ownership Program" is looking into the Big dipper. While a time frame wasn't given for a required answer a stress on removing the attractions ASAP was given.
