News: Congress rejects federal oversight of theme parks

Posted at 3:04 PM EST (2004 GMT)

Dec. 18th, 2007 -- Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee rejected a measure last week that would allow the government to monitor theme parks. However, they have promised to schedule a hearing on the subject matter.

The panel rejected the bill by a measure of 25 to 10. Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts continues to push for the regulation, which would give oversight to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Bipartisan arguments say that the issue needs more study and that the regulation is expensive and unnecessary, given that amusement park/carnival fatalities are very rare.

I am so happy that the Congress actually looked at the stats and percentages and were smart about it.

^ Agreed. Now if people were getting killed left and right then it might be neccesary, but as we know people being killed due to ride fault of park fault is not that common. It's usually rider fault.

Just look at every recent accident. The only ride/park fault that comes to mind is the Superman/Kentucky Kingdom accident. Every other accident that has occured in recent times have been mainly of rider fault.

Thank god our Congress can get at least something right now-a-days.
