News: Maintenance chief blames Intamin for Kentucky Kingdom accident

Posted at 2:29 PM EST (1929 GMT)

Dec. 19th, 2007 -- The maintenance chief at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom has placed blame for the accident on Superman Tower of Power squarely in Intamin’s lap.

John Schmidt said in a deposition that the Intamin AG-built drop ride should have been designed with an auto shutoff in case a cable broke.

Kaitlyn Lasitter, the fourteen-year-old that had her feet severed in the accident had one of her feet reattached and recently began walking with a prosthetic leg.

Yeah, right. This had nothing to do with Intamin. Even if it should have had an auto shut-off, it's still Maintenance's fault that they didn't catch a severe problem. Cables don't just break.

Don't they have e-stops? And, shouldn't the ride operators be watching the rides they are operating at all times, so they can press e-stop if necessary?

First "bad weather" led to an off season... now it's Intamin's fault for a cable that broke? What's next?

Once the ride vehicle has been released from the catch car at the top of the tower E-stop does nothing but keeps the restraints locked until maintenance gets there. Pressing e-stop would not have helped if the ride had already dropped.

Plus, I still blame the park maintenance department for not properly checking the cables.

Actually, if the e-stop is pressed during the drop before the brakes then the cars will stop before they get to the ground. I operated Drop Zone at Carowinds in 2006, and that is what the books said. The e-stop would not have prevented the cable from cutting the girls leg off.

Wait the brakes are static and start halfway down these drop towers, how can you e-stop after dropping RollerNut? It's a freefall.

^I think he just means that the ride will not lower itself all the way to the ground after being slowed by the brakes.

I was under the impression that the cable had snapped on the car's ascension up the tower, so if a ride operator noticed it an e-stop would have prevented the accident.

"^I think he just means that the ride will not lower itself all the way to the ground after being slowed by the brakes." Correct, when the power is cut to the brakes during the 7 second freefall, the car will stop roughly 15-30 feet from the base of the ride. At the point the "E-brake" would stop the ride when the brakes being toggled on and off by the computer.

The claims of the maintenance supervisor make me think of a word. I can't say it here, but it rhymes with "Bullspit."

An inspection would have revealed the fraying cable. My guess would be that an inspection DID reveal it, but management vetoed replacing it for cost and/or downtime reasons.

If there was a problem that the part changers (matinece men) couldn't handle, they should have closed it and contacted Intamin!

^^ Exactly Brian. Why is it that Six Flags was so much of a hurry to take the ride down after the accident if not to hide evidence?

How many years did SF have this ride? And now they are telling Intamin they should have an e brake. I think if you own something that you think is poorly designed you would tell the manufacturer or atleast make suggestions...

^ Raser, that's kind of like the hooker who didn't realize she was raped until the check bounced.

I love how SF thinks that Intamin is responsible for the maintenance of their rides.

This is simply like Santa Said SFI passing the buck.

I've been helping a group look for rides and talked to Larson about their drop tower. when you buy one the ride comes with 2 cables. Why becasue they sugest you replace then every year becasue they wear very fast. When was the last time SFKK replaced the cable?
