News: Six Flags to cut jobs, costs in 2008

Posted at 9:20 AM EST (1420 GMT)

Jan. 17th, 2008 -- Six Flags Inc. plans to cut operating expenses by as much as $60 million this year as it spends less on radio marketing and consolidates advertising accounts.

As previously stated, the company also plans to remove inefficient and out-of-date rides.  Six Flags will also reduce its staff through an early retirement program.

Brooke Gabbert, public relations manager for Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Il confirmed that the Déjà Vu coaster is being removed from the amusement park because the maintenance expense is too high.

The theme park operator hasn't posted an annual profit since 1998. Chief Executive Officer Mark Shapiro called attendance the past two years "disappointing."

Six Flags also has announced it is in "advanced discussions" about developing theme parks in Asia.

What's next, Six Flags?

Wait a minute. Only SFGA's Deja Vu was confirmed to be removed? What about SFOG's.

All the Deja Vu coasters are being removed. Other parks like SFNE will remove 3 Flat rides, No more Legion of Doom, and hours were adjusted. From reports it seem this will happen in many of the other parks. While some of these moves maybe good some of them arn't. Some rides are still under staffed and I don;t see them moving those employees over to other rides.

Only the 2 have been "confirmed".

SFMM actually went as far as saying it wasn't pulling it out.

Now, that might have changed since then though.

Wow. Just wow.

As scared as Shapiro is to spend money to fix his parks other than to add a cheap cloned ride, or small kiddie area... he wants to buy/build another whole PARK(s)!? The last thing he needs to get in his mind is building/buying a new park. He needs to fix what he's got.

Looking at their slide show, they wouldn't have to invest any capital into the construction of those parks, so it's pure profit.

So it would basically be franchising the name and someone else builds it and runs it? Interesting.

What puzzles me is why are these big theme parks going to Asia, South Korea? Paramount when to South Korea, now Six Flags to Asia? I guess business must be better over there.
