News: UPDATE: CGA and Cedar Fair continue name game, Top Gun re-decked

Posted at 10:03 PM EST (0303 GMT)

Jan. 30th, 2008 -- As an update to our previous story, Cedar Fair and California's Great Adventure apparently had a change in heart and changed the name of the former Top Gun coaster for the third time this month and reverted back to the "Flight Deck" name.

While speculation around the 2nd name change surrounded a possible backlash at the "Flight Deck" name, the real reasoning for the last two name changes are unknown. What can be said is that the backlash continues, with added fuel as some preferred the "Afterburn" name.

Check back with ThrillNetwork as we work to bring you updates regarding Top Gun's apparent identity crisis.

UPDATE: Thrillnetwork Editor Kyle L got in touch with Jim Stellmack, Marketing Manager of California's Great America, to see if he could offer a concrete answer to the name game dilemma that Cedar Fair is facing.

Jim understood the confusion surrounding the renaming of Top Gun, but told reporter Kyle L that the park had chosen to stick with "Flight Deck" from day one. The Flight Deck/Afterburn confusion is a result of other parks trying to decide what to name their coasters previously named "Top Gun".

Can someone at Cedar Fair please explain what they are smokeing. How hard is it to pick a name. This is getting stupid now.

I think what's probably behind it all is Dick has a couple monkeys throw darts at possible names on a board. Apparently the one that had hit "Afterburn" had an accident with his diaper and was punished with the take back of the name.

It's a shame how low and unskilled it gets.

Oh wait a minute, I learned from the Geauga Lake episode that CF doesn't do animals.

Oh, trust me, when it comes to names, they're probably spending all kinds of stupid money on marketing research to see which names are better.

They've got to stop using Senior citizen homes and start to interview the 12 yr old Hershey kid that wins contests for naming their coasters.

Just pick a name already. This is making the CF marketing department look bad. Not to mention the previous name was better.

Where are the guys who came up with Millennium Force, TTD, Maverick & Hydra.... Where are they when they are clearly needed. Unless it is the same guys and they have all gone loopy.

This is getting ridiculous. Cedar Fair needs to get it together with naming their rides. Honestly, Mark Shapiro doesn't change the names of Six Flags' rides this much.(Even though Goliath IS a stupid name for a B:TR clone)

If a name of a coaster was going to be this big of a problem for Cedar Fair they should have just had a coaster naming contest. That would have generated more interest in it and wouldn't make them look as bad as renaming one ride several times. In my opinion neither name is great, AfterburnER would have been ok but Flight Deck and Afterburn are both dumb.

I'm starting to think thats why they changed it again. I really believe they saw all the negative comments about Flight Deck and then even more with Afturburn.

I wonder if Cedar Fair is going to play this game all off-season. I really hope they get a name soon so they can start makeing signs for the coasters before the park opens.

So does this mean that the Rugrats Reptar coaster will someday be named Rugburn?
