News: American Idol is coming to Disney World

Posted at 11:32 AM EST (1632 GMT)

Feb. 8th, 2008 -- American Idol apparently doesn’t want to just rule American television, they are now planning to “take over” Disney World.

Disney announced plans Thursday to build a live performance attraction based on the hugely successful Fox television show.  The new attraction is scheduled to open late in 2008 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

"Our goal is to try to recreate the excitement of those 24 people who show up on that 'American Idol' stage," Disney Parks chairman Jay Rasulo said. "We believe many, many viewers want to know exactly how that feels, and we're going to try to reproduce that feeling for them."

While details of the attraction are still being worked out, it will probably follow along similar to the show.  Guests ages 14 and up will be able to audition for a producer, and if they pass that test they will be selected to appear in the one of the park’s “Idol” shows during the day.  Rasulo anticipates six to eight such shows a day.

Backstage, the performers will receive hair and makeup touchups from a stylist and singing tips from a vocal coach. Then, the guests will perform on an "Idol"-like set in front of a live audience and three judges.

Top audience vote-getters will compete in a grand finale show at the end of each day. Overall daily champs will win a special front-of-the-line pass at a regional audition for the actual "American Idol" show. Hindle says Disney winners won't be given any special treatment during the real audition, just the ability to skip ahead.

(Just starting off where we finished in the thread)

I agree. People will get tired of AI soon if not already but Disney could make the attraction work. I'll have to wait for the opening to see if i really think it's going to be a hit or not. I would think with the announcement of this attraction that AI will be around for alot longer. It's still the #1 tv show in america and i'm sure the show will stay as long as it's in the top 5 and more people vote for their next idol than they do a president and the show can always get new judges.

Disney can build something new in it's place if it's a bust anyway.

It seems about 4 or 5 years too late to do this, but I guess AI is desperate for money now. ;)

Yeah it's late but as long as the show stays #1 or in the top 5 i don't see Fox ending the show. I think judges will be replaced before the show ends that is if the current 3 get tired of it.

This sounds really intresting and i just might go give it a try when i get back to WDW in the fall. I think the guest will love it and it will be a hit for a few years atleast.

The show, while losing some of its steam, still gets some of the highest rankings, if not THE highest rankings, on television.

This is strange to me because Disney owns and operates ABC. It seems like Universal would be a better fit for this type of attraction especially because of its trendiness.
