News: One injured following attraction fire at Animal Kingdom

Posted at 9:28 AM EST (1428 GMT)

Feb. 11th, 2008 -- The Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom is scheduled to reopen when the park opens today, a day after a fire on the popular ride injured one woman, officials said.

The ride was closed Sunday after the fire broke out in the engine compartment of one of the ride vehicles sometime between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said. It is standard procedure to close a ride after an accident or malfunction.

Four guests requested medical evaluation at the scene, a woman among them was injured while exiting the ride vehicle.

This is bad. What in the world has been going on at AK since i left.

I really hope the woman is ok but i'm not suprised by this. I worked Safaris for over a year and those trucks are in desperate need of repair, or atleast some of them.

This was not the first truck fire but this one did sound serious unlike all the others.

What caused the fire? It seems to me like this could have been prevented if they have had this happen before.

How ridiculous is it that Disney will spend millions apon millions building these rides but they have the worse safety records of any parks I can think of due to mechanical issues? I know they have the resources and can afford to take better care of their rides beside fresh coats of paint. Oye.

Not sure how it happens but the trucks are old and have had no rehabs since 1996 but they were in the process of getting new engines when i left in oct of 07.

Atleast one or two trucks break down every day stopping the ride for about 30 min until it's towed away.

Read close: she was injured EXITING the vehicle. She probably rushed out of it too fast, tripped and fell on the ground. No one was injured by the fire.

Disney dose not have the worst safety record. look at there record compared to the number of people that go to Disney and compare it to say SFNE/Riverside.

This is upsetting news. It would be better to not hear news like this. but given this is the first major report of a problem in 11 years they are doing something right.
