News: Cedar Point reaches for the sky again

Posted at 9:29 AM EST (1429 GMT)

Feb. 14th, 2008 -- Via Press Release: SANDUSKY, Ohio – Just when you thought that they couldn’t possibly add any more thrills and wild rides to the shores of Lake Erie, Cedar Point amusement park/resort has announced that Skyscraper, a towering thrill ride, will debut this summer in the Challenge Park activity complex.

Skyscraper will be unlike any ride you have ever experienced on the Cedar Point Peninsula. Featuring a giant propeller consisting of two arms that will spin guests in a full circle, Skyscraper is one of the most thrilling rides in the amusement industry.

Four riders, two on each arm, will sit in open cars with their feet dangling, on opposite ends of the propeller. The arms of the propeller quickly rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction, spinning riders 16 stories into the air at speeds of up to 55 mph. At its highest point, riders will be upside down 160 feet above the ground!

The hair-raising ride lasts approximately two minutes. Onlookers can take part in the fun by watching a live streaming video of the passengers screaming in delight as they soar through the air. Riders aboard Skyscraper will have the opportunity to purchase this memorable video after completing their thrilling ride.

Manufactured by Gravity Works, Inc., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Skyscraper will welcome its first passengers when it opens to the public in May. Skyscraper will have an individual ride fee, and admission to Cedar Point will not be required.

“We are very excited about introducing a ride of this caliber to Challenge Park,” said Bill Spehn, vice president of park operations for Cedar Point. “Skyscraper will be a great addition to the thrilling rides and experiences that we offer our guests this summer.”

Located between Cedar Point and Soak City, Challenge Park also features the RipCord Skycoaster, two high-speed go-kart tracks and two challenging 18-hole miniature golf courses. Challenge Park is open to the public, and admission to Cedar Point or Soak City is not required. Each attraction requires a separate fee. Special combo packages that include discounted tickets for the attractions at Challenge Park will be available this summer.

Nice addition. I wonder if it's the skyscraper from Dorney.

It is. I rode it at Dorney, so it won't be a new credit for me. I hope it's not more than it was at Dorney because $12 for a single ride is a bit high.

I was worried for a moment that it was coming from valleyfair. Then I realized that I don't really care about it all that much lol

It started at Dorney, then got shipped over to ValleyFair!, and now it has backtracked to Cedar Point. I really like that ride, and I was disheartened when they removed it from Dorney. Oh well.

So now it's leaving valleyfair! too? This ride is traveling a lot. It's a fun one though, so it's not like every CP fan should be upset from a used ride.

Well we know it's not going to Geauga Lake next.

It's funny that I looked at that ride at Dorney and said an impulse could go in that place, then it went to Valleyfair! to sit next to an impulse. The Cedar Fair Ride Rotation program brings this to the next stop.

I figured it was the same. I remeber seeing it on a coaster special on TV years ago at Dorney and it happened to be the year i went to Dorney as was really looking foward to riding it but when i got to Dorney in 2004 it was gone. I was so bummed.

I went to Dorney the year they took it out. I was the next person in line to ride it, when it started to rain and they shut it down for the day. I was dissapointed I never got to ride it, but now i get a second chance when I go to Cedar Point this year!!

CHILLERLC1 you are banned for bringing up Geagua Lake. ;) lol

I have never been on one of these, there is one in Pigeon Forge that looks like it will throw someone out into the middle of the strip any second. It just looks like it hasn't been taken care of at all.

4 riders? Come on. KMG's SPEED model holds eight, four per arm. Unless this company builds a higher one in which a weight/capacity restriction is enforced.

I rode this type of ride at Fiesta Texas, which they removed for the ever-so-important Tony Hawk's Big Spin, and it was alot of fun. I'm glad to see one arriving at the Point this year.

I rode it at Dorney. Scariest ride I've ever been on. But I haven't been on a slingshot before.

I have yet to go on a sling shot either. The look like alot of fun. I guess i'll be spending some time and extra cash at Challenge Park next time i go to CP.

I wonder how much it will cost to ride. Maybe $5.

I only rode the Slingshot at Dorney the closing Saturday of its last year, because I had read a rumor it was leaving. It was half price that day, and man, was it amazing! I was really sad to see it leave. It seems like every time I really start liking something at Dorney, it goes away! First Hercules, then Slingshot...

Let's hope they don't figure out my favorite attraction now.

Dorney doesnt have a slingshot......

But of all the upcharge rides.. Slingshots are my favorite and then come the Booters/SkyScrapers rides... But only ones that run LONG.. So im guessing it will be lame at CP.. only going around 2 or 3 times each way.... Where as at a fair I can get a cycle on a KMG Speed that sends you around about 10 times each way.. But even that cant touch the amazingness that is the Funtime Vomatron...

My hands down absolute favorite up-charge attraction ever was the worlds largest Sky Coaster in Kissimmee Florida...300+ Feet of pure awesomeness!!! I never had an adrenaline rush like I did on that ride...and what a view!

I rode that a few dozen times. I lived 10 min away. Thats was quite possibly the best SkyCoaster in the world.

It was the first one that really scared me enough to wait and watch about 10 people before going on.

The one at Carowinds was half that height and i rode that one like it was going out of style.

The one at Fiesta Texas cost $12, which was a bit overpriced in my opinion. Hopefully CP's will be a bit cheaper.

I don't like the idea of CP taking VF's skyscraper. The ride fits perfectly at Valleyfair and fills in that part of the park very nicely. It also does bring in some cash to the park because I always see it running with someone on it.
