News: Six Flags park planned for Dubai

Posted at 12:46 PM EST (1746 GMT)

Mar. 4th, 2008 -- Six Flags Inc. announced today that it will develop a new theme park in Dubai.

The park will be part of a 3-billion-square-foot project that will include restaurants, hotels, as well as Universal Studios and DreamWorks theme parks.

Six Flags is expected to break ground on the park in 2009.

"This is a historic day for our company," Six Flags President and CEO Mark Shapiro said in a statement. "Expanding Six Flags beyond our current North American borders validates the growing strength and momentum of our brand."

"We now have the opportunity to create a world-class theme park destination that will allow guests from around the globe to experience Six Flags' unique combination of thrills and entertainment."

The project is a partnership between Six Flags Inc. and Tatweer, a member of Dubai Holding. This is the first Six Flags project to be developed outside North America.

Dubai: The center of the world. It'll have everything, and it'll probably collapse in 20 years.

Yep...... I can't believe SF is jumping on this bandwagon. Nice to know a company a billion dollars in debt can think about building a new park overseas instead of fixing the parks it currently has. I think this could be Deja Vu. I see another SF collapse coming soon.

Are you sure the bill isn't being footed by the private development company that is building Dubailand, like all the other parks that have been announced?

Six Flags designs the park and the rides and just operates the park under a management contract, with a nifty share of the profits, of course.

If this is the case, I see them pulling out all stops to make this park a wonderful alternative to Universal Dubailand- located next door..

^ That's my feeling as well. If Six flags was doing it themselves, I just can't see it happening.

But the oil capital of the world has trillions of dollars to spend on theme parks.

Wait... So Six Flags, Universal, Dreamworks, and Busch are all making parks in Dubai?!? This should be interesting. Is this park also going to be located on one of those palm island thingies?

I predict they will all sink into the ocean one of these days.

I think this is part of that massive complex with the world's tallest building and all that stuff. But I'm not sure.

I'm hoping Shapiro isn't trying to butter us up right now by making us happy about the U.S. park improvements, and then the next thing you know, all the focus is on the Dubai park...Jeez everything these days is all about Dubai. Blah blah blah.

Seems like Dubai is gonna be a nifty place to be if you like theme parks. All I hear about is Dubai! I guess it really is going to be the ''worlds theme park''.

Now we're just waiting on Cedar Fair to announce a park there.

I don't see Cedar Fair announcing a park there, because lets face it- they are not near as relevant brand wise as say Busch, Universal, or even Six Flags which represents brands and characters people across the World know and love...

Leaving Disney...

Now all we need is Six Flags Korea. It's just as crazy over there.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts president, James Rasulo (Not me... I wish, Haha!) said back in 06, "[Disney has] not looked at Dubai as a destination aggressively seeking development."

He also, "did not think that projects such as Dubailand were any direct threat to Disneyland or any other resorts in their portfolio."

Another funny thing I found was this article dated May of 2005, "Dubai-based master planning agency Nakheel is secretly in talks with the Walt Disney Co. to build their fourth overseas theme park resort in the emirate of Dubai."

Nakheel is the company that is supporting the Busch park...

Actually Ted...it is.

SIX isn't footing the bill here, Tatweer is. All Six Flags is doing here is licensing out the brand. They don't have to pay for the construction, operation, or management of the park. With Dubai, they sit back and collect profits. Check out this article, then I dare you to laugh at Six Flags. The only thing they need for this brilliant move is some patience from the investors.
