News: Dolphin dies after collision at Discovery Cove

Posted at 11:54 AM EDT (1554 GMT)

May. 16th, 2008 -- A dolphin died after colliding with another during a stunt at Discovery Cove.

Two dolphins were performing and leapt into the air, where they collided. Sharky, a 30-year-old dolphin, died. The other dolphin was uninjured, a park spokeswoman said.

This is the first dolphin death since the SeaWorld sister park opened eight years ago. Discovery Cove lets people swim with marine animals.

About 30 people were watching the show.

Thats really sad news. I love Dolphins. That might have been the dolphin i swam with last year. I remeber the trainer saying it was one of their oldest dolphins.

This is really sad. I've never heard of a dolphin getting injured in a show, much less hearing about one that died in one. I'm surprised it was enough to kill one but not even injur the other. It is very fortunate that the other one was ok though.

Yeah, it's been about a month. Guess it was one of those things that got stuck in the pipeline somewhere and is only now being caught by some of the news agencies. The article it's linked too is dated April 28th, so it's been a little bit.
