News: Cedar Point's Wildcat closed after accident

Posted at 2:17 PM EDT (1817 GMT)

May. 23rd, 2008 -- Cedar Point's Wildcat remains closed a week after an accident that hurt 10 people.

On May 16, a car didn't make it up the lift hill and rolled back. It ran into another car.

Nine people were treated for their injuries at the park, and one was taken to the hospital. A park spokesman said the ride won't operate until the cause of the accident is determined.

Wildcat is 50 feet tall and goes 40 mph. It opened in 1979.

Oh Noes! Where are the anti-coaster pundits demanding this coaster get torn down?

If the anti-rollbacks weren't working, why was the coaster running?

This also looks as best a time as any to inspect the chain itself, and perhpas modernize the chain and anti-rollbacks (and cars) so that they are like your typical lift-chain and anti-rollbacks instead of a heavy duty link chain as your lift chain.

About 10 years ago two people died when the wild mouse car they were in slid backwards at Gillian's Wonderland in NJ. That brought up a big deal with anti rollbacks. It probably moved Six Flags to add then to the Texas Tornado at Astroworld. That wild mouse coaster was relocated to Crystal Springs.

I'm almost surprised the brakes haven't failed on the thing and crashed that way before. It was one of the must uncomfortable rides I went on all last year. The brake run was severe IMO.

Question, How did 10 people get injured when the cars only hold 4 people each?

I had that idea too, CoasterchickRN. How CAN 10 people get hurt?

I got my back kind of jacked up when we ran into the car in front of us on the brake run. Plus, every time it it went down the 3rd hill, it would make a slamming noise!

There were probably two cars in the station, and all three were full, giving a total of 12 riders (including the third car that rolled back). Evidently two of the people in those cars weren't hurt.

But on topic, I agree. They should definitely modernize that lift. I don't know why everyone's complaining about Wildcat, though. imo, it's a good ride.

Wildcat probably saw TTD do a rollback and wanted to be cool.

Is anyone sure it was the lift hill that the car rolled back on? With the anti-rollback device, you would think that couldn't happen.

That coaster is almost 30 years old, and is a portable model to begin with. I'm amazed that it's lasted.

It does need to be modernized a bit, just like Cedar Point's worked to modernize some of its other coasters.

The anti- roll back device is both on the lift hill and the mating part is on the car. It quite possible that the anti- roll back device was in perfect order but the car was faulty. Especially since both the anti - roll back and the chain dog failed in order for this to happen.

You can find wildcat anywhere. It's a fun coaster, but when surrounded by other CP rides, it's dwarfed and forgettable. However, it is a great training coaster for the little ones.

Wildcat is still down as of Friday June 6th, 2008. I was at CoasterMania Friday and they only had maybe one car on the track.
