News: Disney closing Pleasure Island nightclubs

Posted at 3:35 PM EDT (1935 GMT)

Jun. 28th, 2008 -- Walt Disney World is closing its six nightclubs at Pleasure Island.

The clubs will close after Sept. 27 to make Downtown Disney more family friendly. Disney will reopen Pleasure Island with more restaurants and stores over the next couple of years.

Disney officials are calling the change "a bold new vision" for Downtown Disney.

Pleasure Island opened in 1989 and was blamed by some for a decline in downtown Orlando's nightlife in the 1990s. It sits in the middle of two areas marketed to families, so the music, drinking and partying stood out from the rest of the atmosphere.

Though the nightclubs are closing, the other businesses on Pleasure Island will remain open. They include restaurants, a cigar bar and clothing stores.

The move is total garbage as far as I'm concerned. Terrible decision to rip out some interesting entertainment to make room for corporate restaurant chains and more shopping.

I completely agree. PI brought in alot of money and guests and had some very unique clubs. I think this move will hurt them a little.

I'm sure Universal is happy to hear this news. CityWalk will be very busy now.

Pitition is now going around to save the Adventures Club. Over 2,200 so far.

It doesn't suprise me that they are closing the dance clubs... they are usually dead these days ever since they started the age restrictions.

Its a real shame to lose the Comedy Warehouse and the Adventurer's Club, though. They're both very unique clubs with a huge fanbase. I wish they could at least keep these two, because I agree with Phil - it would just be so sad to see these two buildings turned into more bland, corporate resturants.
