News: Great Escape adding ride, winter event

Posted at 2:42 PM EDT (1842 GMT)

Jul. 11th, 2008 -- The Great Escape is adding an "iconic" ride and an event in winter.

Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro did not say what the ride would be, other than it would be thrilling and "visually stunning."

Shapiro said the winter event will be "Holiday in the Park," which includes a celebration of winter holidays, a Christmas tree and shows.

Shapiro also commented on the economy, calling the chain "value alternative." He said the indoor water park across the street, Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark, is something he'd like to do at other parks in the future. Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark is the only one of its kind in Six Flags.

Sounds like the SLC they've had on the property in Storage since Winter, 2006 to me.

Thats great news that they are starting a Christmas event. Something i wish CF would have kept going at Carowinds but oh well.

^ For the general public, a SLC certainly is iconic. While coaster enthusiasts may hate it, the GP love it and since most of the people visiting the park is the GP, the opinions of coaster enthusiasts aren't as overpowering.

I can't blame the park if they install the old Serial Thriller since it should be quite popular.

I think the Christmas event is a great move. The park is already very family oriented so the event will fit right in. The area is already a popular area with nearby ski resorts so There is already a built in tourist base.

as for the SLC who knows how it will be reserved. There is a limited local population. Since this area operates off tourism it's very likely the visitor has ridden the SLC coaster at SFNE, DL, or Mories pier. But an SLC coaster is not an Iconic ride.

I smell Big Dipper...Or is the Coney Island Cyclone being dismantled at the end of the year when the park closes?

What about "Batman: The Escape"/"Shockwave"?

I'm not sure though. Did anyone ever find out if it was sold along with Darien Lake or did Six Flags still own the coaster?

Why would they move and install Batman: the escape when the SLC is already at the park. Either way I'm pretty sure SFI didn't keep the coaster when they sold Derien lake.

On a side not I heard a rummer that the new iconic ride for the park will be a Drop tower. They will remove and install the tower form SFNO. They will install in the plot of land rainbow used to operated in. The SLC will not be installed in the foreseeable future.
