They picked the worst possible year to start out I think, and the fact that they don't have a ton of rides is probably going to hurt people coming back for a few years.

I think the fact that the park is lacking in the attractions deparment has more to do with the poor attendance than the economy.

Who didn't see this coming.
Not many attractons & way overpriced for what you get.
I'd be willing to bet the park is sold in 2-3 years unless ticket prices drop by at least $20 or they offer NC/SC residents $30 every day all year long. Season Pass prices are way too high as well.
LOL.... 3 Million a year. What a joke.

I don't think the gas prices have as much an effect as their lack of advertising. I know someone who went to Myrtle Beach a few weeks ago for vacation, and didn't even hear about the park the whole week she was down there.

I know a girl who went to Myrtle Beach with her family, and they had talked about visiting HRP, but never got around to it. I don't know if that says more about her and her family, or about Hard Rock Park.

Well this is a load of crap. Slumping economy and gas prices? I don't think so. The reason why HRP is doing so poorly is because it was not very well thought through. I went there 4th of July weekend and the place was practically empty. I would like to know of ONE amusement park in the world that is empty during a holiday weekend. Granted HRP is close to the more popular Myrtle Beach, there is still many people seeking thrills. One problem is their lack of things to do. As stated in my review of the park, if ONE ride is out of commission, it has a severe impact on the rest of the park. They simply can not afford to have any rides down for the day. Second is advertising. Sure they have billboard after billboard all up and down the highway, but other than that there is no other type of advertising. The entire weekend I was there, not once did I see a commercial on TV advertising the place. This is a managerial problem, not economical.
And as a side note, gas prices have been starting to go down recently, so umm I don't think they can use that excuse at all.

I think it's a number of factors. This isn't going to be a good year for amusement parks because of the economy. Gas prices are still high, so that's affecting vacations. The park is also pretty expensive for what it offers.
If things turn around with the economy and the park sticks with it, it might end up being successful. But, as some people point out, maybe the managers should focus a bit more on advertising.

Parks across the country are indeed suffering. All of the parks that I have been to this summer were all fairly empty. Both parks near me are not meeting attendance expectations (one of which just invested 30 million dollars in improvements). It could be lack of marketing, but I think that isn't the big picture here.

I think they called up Six Flags and said, "Hey, give us a good excuse!"
Six Flags: Blame it on the weather!
Hard Rock: But the weather has been good here!
Six Flags: Blame it on Bush!
Hard Rock: Bush never visited the park!
Six Flags: Blame it on gas!
Hard Rock: Brilliant!

I wasn't planning on attending HRP. However, I can tell you that gas prices has kept me from meeting all of my plans this summer. I think HRP has three things to blame:
No Marketing
High ticket price (for what you get)
Gas
People just dont have as much disposable income because it take 40% more to fill yout tank than it did last summer.

I talked about this place for 2 years with customers at work that I know go to Myrtle Beach like every year. I cringe at the ticket price but I really hope they make it in and give me a review. Going south I'm all caught up in wanting to do Carowinds and SFOG first before returning to Myrtle Beach and thus doing this place.

The place was empty on june 25th but way over priced for outsiders "vacationers". No advertising again except for bilboards, and radio on Myrtle Beachs' classic rock station. No TV ads though. LED Zepp is good, but it was definetely doomed from the start.

Parks will never admit fault for low attendance. so they blame things like gas. The parks hear in New England have been seeing solid crowds with locals staying local. Only time attendance was low was mid July when there was extreme heat and heavy rain.
3 million was not going to happen in a perfect situation this seems overly high. Hopefully we will see another ride or 2 added for next year and a more reasonably admission price. A low price locals admission rate might be a good move also.
