News: Universal matches Disney price increase

Posted at 10:33 AM EDT (1433 GMT)

Aug. 6th, 2008 -- Only days after Disney announced they would raise their one-day ticket price to $75, Universal Orlando has done the same.

Beginning Aug. 6, Universal will charge $75 for a one-day ticket to either Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure. The new price reflects a $4, or a 5.6 percent, increase.

"We believe our pricing reflects the world-class experience we offer our guests," Universal spokesman Michael Lewellen said. "It is also representative of the new content added to Universal Orlando Resort in the past 12 months with the Simpsons Ride and Disaster."

Lewellen says the price increases allow the theme park to invest in new entertainment experiences. He noted that Universal Orlando is scheduled to open the Hollywood Rip Ride Rocket roller coaster in 2009 and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010.

Orlando's three major theme parks -- SeaWorld, Universal and Disney -- historically raise prices within a few days of each other. SeaWorld announced a price increase on June 30. A one-day ticket to SeaWorld now costs $69.95.

Copycats! I didn't see this coming.

This mean when RRR & HP open Universal will go up to $80 or $85 and it will be Disney's turn to follow.

I hate the idea of matching the competition that the Orlando parks do. Just because one raises its prices to an insane rate doesn't mean your park has to follow! Keep the prices lower and advertise that! I'm not paying $75 to get into any amusement park unless it's a two-day, park-hopper pass. Jeez.

The reason they do it, supposedly, is that if things are cheaper at one park then guests will perceive that it isn't as good as the more expensive ones. I've never believed that for a second, but really the one day prices don't matter especially at Universal. There are always tons of deals that can be easily found instead of walking up to the gate and paying full price.
