News: Hard Rock Park employees laid off

Posted at 8:12 PM EDT (0012 GMT)

Aug. 9th, 2008 -- Hard Rock Park laid off 25 to 30 employees this week, a spokesman said.

Full- and part-time employees were laid off, but spokesman Jim Olecki called it "minuscule." The park only hired 2,000 employees instead of a projected 3,000.

Olecki said the park will be open past Labor Day, and it will be open next season, but things could change depending on attendance levels.

Park executives have said layoffs are adjustments in staffing levels that happen at many seasonal employers in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Earlier this week, the park CEO, Steven Goodwin, said people are cutting back on vacation and spending less money. He said it's "a really tough summer."

Blah blah blah, more excuses. Can you say, beginning of the end for HRP?

I hope it not the end comming. It does appear that attendance levels are down everywhere this year. I know HRP is not getting rave reviews but I'd like to see them grow and become better.

Just becuase attendance isn't exactly what a new park hopes for or just because they have to layoff a few members of there staff doesn't mean that there going to close (and yes 30 is a few when your talking out of 2,000). ALL parks have problems in the first few years. Parks are like people, none are perfect but as long as they make good choices it will be ok.

Like i said before. HRP will either be sold or closed in 2-3 years.

Out here in California I talked to a man who was a partner in a new waterpark in Barstow (in the high desert on the way from Los Angeles to Las Vegas) about 9 years ago. He told me that the partners made themselves sign an agreement that they were committed to the project for 5 years after the date it opened. They could not leave the partnership under any circumstances. This is how Hard Rock needs to see this project - give it at least 5 years and upgrade it every year. That should not only help it attract more people but will make it more attractive to any potential buyer.

This can't be good, but I think the park will do good in the longrun. As far as I've heard, the park hasn't advertised much and some advertising really is all that it needs and maybe a lower admission price or more attractions.

They honestly need about 2-3 more coasters and about 5 flats rides to really be worth paying what they charge.

They do need alot more advertising, drop prices and maybe give residents a good discount all year not one month.

Those guys who opened Rock-A-Hoola waterpark at Lake Delores north of Barstow were idiots! They didn't give it 5 years either.

Hard Rock Park is a different story. They may struggle, they may sell the park, but there will be an operator who can operate this park. It's far too elaborate and the infrastructure is there.

They need 2-3 more roller coasters? So you want them to start repeating the mistakes of Six Flags? What they need is to spend more money on marketing.

No. I was just saying if they expect people to pay $50 they should have built atleast 2 more coasters & more flats.

Whats in the park now is so not worth $50.

To become like SF they will have to open more parks and i don't see that happening.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was only sharing what one of the partners told me. I was the collections manager for the commercial nursery that sold the plant material used in the construction of Rock-A-Hoola. I moved to Sacramento about three years after the conversation and lost track of the park. I do stand by what I said, though. Amusement park profitability has to be seen in the long term.

I went to HRP a few weeks ago, agree $50 was too high for what little was there..i was over it in like 1 hour...they have a "come back for $10" deal where you can come back within 7 days and get in for $10

I think the beginning of the end is an exaggeration. This is only the first season, and the economy hasn't been kind to new places. Give it time.
