News: Giant snake set to attack Carowinds in 2009

Posted at 8:02 AM EDT (1202 GMT)

Sep. 10th, 2008 -- Via Press Release: There’s a new species coming to the Carolinas, but this is no animal! Carolina Cobra is an innovative new scream machine that will be the park’s 12th roller coaster when it makes its much-anticipated debut at Carowinds in 2009.

Carowinds, a 112-acre amusement park located on the border of the Carolinas, will debut Carolina Cobra in early spring 2009. This rebellious 125-foot-tall steel coaster will stand as the second tallest coaster in the park. This large new addition will hover near the entrance of Boomerang Bay, and, coincidentally, happens to be a “boomerang” coaster, meaning that it will travel the same track forwards and backwards.

The boomerang experience is unlike any coaster at Carowinds. Riders on the Carolina Cobra are pulled up a steep 125-foot lift hill and sent diving down a 120-foot drop, speeding along a 65-degree descent into three inversions, including a cobra roll and a 360-degree loop. The train is then “caught” by another lift hill, and, once it looses momentum, is towed to the top as riders wait in anticipation for the second descent. When the train is finally released, riders are sent racing into the inversions again…except this time in reverse!

In addition, Carolina Cobra is adorned with a newly designed train exclusive only to its tracks. No other parks in the United States have yet to utilize this spacious style of train, designed specifically for a heightened rider-experience. This new sleek 28 passenger train will create an aerodynamic experience unlike any other on a coaster as riders undergo the sensations of wind and speed at an amplified level. With its narrowed nose and widened harnesses, Carolina Cobra is sure to provide a smooth ride.

"Carowinds has always been a perfect blend of family-entertainment and thrill attractions," said John Shanrock, the park’s vice president and general manager. “For 2009, however, we plan to tilt the scale more to the thrill side! Carolina Cobra will be exhilarating and unlike any coaster that we house at this park. Only serious thrill-seekers should venture into the queues of this towering twisting serpent.”

Carolina Cobra joins a portfolio of 11 industry-leading roller coasters including Afterburn, Vortex, Carolina Cyclone, Nighthawk, The Hurler and Thunder Road.

What's the layout? ha

I never saw the debut site for one of these rides. I saw the naming contest for the Alabama Adventures one. I remember watching a teaser video for the 2000 installation of WoF's Boomerang.

Look at this gang: "Carolina Cobra is adorned with newly designed trains exclusive only to its tracks. No other parks in the United States have yet to utilize these spacious trains, designed specifically for a heightened rider-experience.

The sleek semi-open 28-passenger trains will create an aerodynamic experience unlike any other on a coaster as riders undergo the sensations of wind and speed at an amplified level, for a smooth enjoyable ride. " http://carolinacobra.carowinds.com/p...x.cfm#trains />

Well sorta. They didn't give it the trains with only leg restraints.

It's more a wide OTSR, so it looks like it won't head bang too much.

I didn't ride the changed Great NorEaster at Morey's to be able to tell you how it's changed.

"Carolina Cobra joins a portfolio of 11 industry-leading roller coasters including Afterburn, Vortex, Carolina Cyclone, Nighthawk, The Hurler and Thunder Road." Maybe Afterburn leads. Every park does this.

It looks awesome. I love the name, logo and colors not to mention the nice train we will have to go with it.

I like the restraints. It's basically a lap bar that just comes down over your head. Your arms will be completely free (atleast thats how it looks) so thats a major plus.

I was suprised to read it will be taller than before. I guess they plan on adding some additional track. Maybe something to do with the new trains so it's now 125ft and not 116ft.

I guess it is a typo. Carowinds has never lied about the height of a coaster before

Uh yes they have. They said that Top Gun was going to be 2 minutes 30 seconds long.

We all know it's not that long.

Parks always do this. They "bend" the truth to sell their product.

Afterburn is about 2:30 from station to station. When i worked there i timed it and it was more like 2:41

Vortex is over 2 min from station to station.

Every park times station to station so it's not really a lie.

Glad they're getting a new coaster. There just aren't enough boomerangs in this world.

I like that it's an "innovative new" coaster, when Boomerangs have been around for more than 25 years, and it's a used ride. Poor Carowinds. It would have been better off getting the Tivoli coaster from Geauga Lake.

^^ No, they are just building it up so that it sounds super dooper exciting, like all parks do.

The coaster opened at Geagua Lake in 1996. Wow, that's "innovative" and "new"!!!

At least we are getting something besides a 3rd wave pool.

Yep. It's something besides a waterpark or Nick Central expansion so i'm excited. Even if it was 50 years old i'd be happy to have it.

Plus the general public makes up about 95% of park attendance so it will be new to them since nothing like it is anywhere near in NC,SC,GA or VA.

The GP will eat this up and Carowinds will reap the profits. Thats all that matters.

Really? This will be the THIRD coaster at this park that has a name beginning with the word "Carolina." It's like they think the Carolinas are such a big deal. I don't think so!

Anybody else find it strange? I mean, imagine if some other park did this:

Ohio Wicked Twister; Ohio Raptor; Ohio Mantis.

California Goliath; California Tatsu; California Deja Vu.

Eh...

Well I was all hyped up when I started to read this story because Carowinds was getting a new coaster. What a let down, ANOTHER boomerang being built at a park that does not need it. Carowinds needs a hyper, end of story.

It's not strange. It's just that Carolina sound good in front of everything.

Carolina Skytower, Carolina Taheels, Carolina Panthers & Carolina Hurricanes. Carolina Cobra just sound perfect.

I would have rather had a Hyper but this will hold me over just fine until 2010 or 2011.

Ever since White Lightnin' left the park I have wanted something like this type of ride at the park. I loved Deja Vu at SFOG when it worked then they got rid of that. Maybe with the new trains it won't be the same old boomerang coaster.
