News: Chance Rides recalls swing rides

Posted at 7:32 AM EDT (1132 GMT)

Oct. 9th, 2008 -- Wednesday, about 85 Yo-Yo swing rides were recalled by the manufacturer to repair defects involved in two accidents.

The Yo-Yo ride made by Chance Rides Manufacturing Inc., based in Wichita, Kan is a staple at many parks and fairs around the country.

In May, a Yo-Yo ride collapsed at the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angels Camp, Calif., injuring 23 people. In March 2006, a Yo-Yo ride at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas, also malfunctioned. Nine people were injured, sustaining bruises and back and neck strains, according to reports from the Texas Department of Insurance.

Chance Rides Manufacturing will give ride owners and state regulators kits to help inspect and repair defective rides, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday. The company will also offer new maintenance guidelines for the rides.

Is it really a recall when they aren't sending the actual rides back to be altered? I realize that that would be pretty wild to ship 85 yo-yos to Kansas I just thought the term "recalled" meant "bring it back in".

Well Unlike cars you can't take it to a local dealership. But, yes it's a recall. that's all they do with a Car recall. They send the repair piece out to the local dealerships and they install the new part.

I never heard about or saw in problems with the Yo-Yo at Carowinds but i'm sure it was just a matter of time. Good thing they're sending the required parts to fix the problem although i'd be happier if Carowinds never got the POS ride in the first place.
