News: Great Adventure announces Medusa makeover

Posted at 12:43 PM EDT (1643 GMT)

Oct. 27th, 2008 -- Via press release: Six Flags Great Adventure, recognized for its award-winning collection of thrill rides, today unveiled plans to dramatically transform the world's first floorless, looping coaster, Medusa. The Medusa redesign will deliver a multi-sensory ride experience with all-new thematics and innovative, state-of-the-art visual, audio and sensory effects launching it into another dimension of thrills and excitement.

“Since it opened in 1999 as the world's first floorless coaster, Medusa has been a fan favorite,” said Mark Kane, Six Flags Great Adventure Park President. “This redesign will take one of the park's most popular attractions to the next level.

A similar transformation of the X2 coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles has received widespread acclaim and we expect the re-launch of this ride to shatter that response. It will be a must-ride experience.”

Six Flags Great Adventure continues to push the envelope — going far beyond traditional coasters to offer thrill seekers the exhilaration of a roller coaster combined with unique storytelling and high tech elements incorporating fire, fog, water and precisely orchestrated audio production designed to assault the senses for a world class “show” on a roller coaster.

Unlike traditional coasters, Medusa trains are floorless, giving riders the sensation of flying as their feet dangle above the track. The B&M coaster is one of 13 coasters at Six Flags Great Adventure and has delivered more than 9 million rides since its debut. Guests can take advantage of the last chance to experience Medusa's original Greek mythology theme during the remaining days of Fright Fest. Compelling details of Medusa's multi-dimensional ride transformation will be revealed as Spring 2009 draws near.

Guests can experience all that Six Flags Great Adventure has to offer all season long with a 2009 Season Pass. A Season Pass offers guests unlimited visits to the theme park and Wild Safari and pays for itself in less than two visits. When purchasing a Season Pass, guests receive a coupon book featuring more than $300 in special offers including free concerts and five Bring-A-Friend-Free tickets for selected days. A Season Pass can be used at all Six Flags Theme Parks throughout the country and is available for purchase online at Sixflags.com/greatadventure for only $84.99. Guests who buy a 2009 Season Pass now can use it the remainder of the 2008 season to experience all the thrills and chills of Fright Fest.

Makes me wonder if they will use the same system as Zeppelin has.

Also it sounds like the Greek theming is going away too.

Dance Dance Reveolution Medusa anyone?

I don't really see a reason for Six Flags to do this type of stuff. It just seems like with the company the way it is that the money would be better spent elsewhere.

Sounds pretty lame and pointless.

Noone gives Six Flags credit anymore, at least they are trying to provide new experiences without going bankrupt... I give them the nod for the ride makeovers.

I personally would much rather see a preexisting ride here be renovated than Shapiro try another pathetic attempt at a "ride". I guarantee the GP will receive the Medusa makeover much better than they received the horrible Dark Knight that was unanimously (from hearing reactions outside of the ride, and throughout the park) hated by young and old alike. Medusa needed paint anyway, why not add a little more?

Yeah, right. Medusa is the ride that never gets a line longer than 20 minutes until Fright Fest. Hell, they have started pushing back the opening time of Medusa to 12 PM (when the park opens at 10:30) since barely anyone goes there and there would be no point in operating the ride for 0-5 people.

Everyone got over the name and theme. It's the most reliable, modern looping ride in the park. It makes no sense to waste the money here when we could use a free fall tower and other flats. We need the staff for that too though.

It's basically a cheap way to call a used ride new and not build a new coaster. Good move for SF i think.

Basically to get the rides popularity back up.

I think this ride suffers mostly due to its location in the park. As a Gadv passholder, even I don't make it over there more than a few times a season. It is just so far away. I think the next major flat ride should go where the giant teepee used to be. Topspin?

Ding Ding Ding! Thunderhawk's got it! Plus it has to contend with El Toro, Kingda Ka, and Medusa for attention. Plus the El Toro-Medusa bridge has been out for a bit, and will be for the rest of the season, which makes it even harder to get to Medusa. It's at the furthest point of the bigger half of the park. People still love the ride, it just takes a lot to go there.

I love my El Toro-Medusa bridge but people it's not like VIPER's still there. VIPER was really not worth the walk. Medusa sure is worth it but it's a lot harder with the bridge out of order.

WOW.....Did i just read that right?

I can't believe a coaster would be too far of a walk to ride it.

From the entrance, it is like 3/4 a mile. Literally.

I think this is a great idea. Medusa needs some extra theming. SF cant afford a new ride so this will have to do. I was planning on hitting SFOG next year but now I think I'll head right on back to NJ. Does anybody know if the bridge to medusa will be open by the beginning of the season?

It's been getting work done since it originally closed. I would hope so.
