Posted at 8:49 PM EDT (0049 GMT)

Apr. 9th, 2004 -- A Six Flags Magic Mountain worker was struck and killed by "Scream!" before the ride opened today.

The Santa Clara Sherriff's department has not yet released the name of the victim, but the employee was reportedly in a restricted area of the ride when she was struck by the ride.

OSHA is on the scene and is currently investigating along with the Sherriff's department.

More information will be posted here as soon as it becomes available.

"Magic Mountain has 18 other roller coasters on its 260-acre playground of rides and attractions."

What? Where did they get this statistic?

This sucks. I wonder what the worker did. Maybe the worker was in maintenance and walking the track. This is strange.

It was not a maintenance walk. If it were, other ride hosts/operators at the attraction would have known about it, and not cycled the ride. And even if she WAS doing a maintenance walk or check:

The woman was ON the track when she was hit (duh, that's how she was killed) and she would have felt the vibrations and shaking of the track and structure way ahead of time for her to get off. In addition, Scream! is by no means a silent coaster. Think Mantis loudness. It's THAT loud, there is no way she could have not known the ride was cycling when she was on the track.

It is clearly a suicide. Why anybody would choose this as a method is beyond me. If you're going to kill yourself, at least do it in the privacy of your bedroom or on your own property. Sorry, I'm not being sensitive on this subject, but what she did was really lame, it isn't an accident.

That is pretty weird, why she'd be walking the track, and yet, didn't know the ride was running, or didn't hear or feel it coming. Suicide? Perhaps, but you'd think she'd pick an easier way. As for the "18 other roller coasters"......jeez, the media has GOT to start getting their facts straight.

I didn't see anything about 18 other roller coasters in the whole article. Where did you even find words to say that chip.

I live in LA and watched the news. The lady was supposedly doing a maitnance check on the ride when see was struck.

They must have updated it, vidgms2.

If you're a registered member at the Los Angeles Times, I added an updated article. Basically it has her name. A spokeswoman from the park says they "don't know why she was there," so she probably wasn't doing a maintenance walk. Someone on another forum said the worker was probably from outside the United States, and that Magic Mountain is hiring international workers again. It could have been a language barrier that caused her to walk to the track and get killed.

As both articles say, they're still investigating.

The NBC News at 11 I watched said that the worker was from Thailand. Ya never know. They also said that it took all day to track down her parents in Bangkok.

This is sad, but I do not understand why she would be anywhere near the track.

Ok this is something that I dont understand and well the police need to be considering a suicide. First off those that have seen and/or ridden Scream like myself KNOW that this is a very loud roller coaster. There is no way you cant hear it in operation. Not only that but hellooooooooo, when the train is on the lift hill you can hear the "chain dog" clank clank clanking while the train is going up the hill. So thats a clear indication that you need to get off the track. Another thing is that you can feel the vibration of the coaster as you're even standing in line waiting to get on. So I don't see how anyone in right sound and body can get hit by it. Not only that, but usually when a worker is inspecting the track of a ride, it is shut off, so there is no way that someone can send the train on the track. Obviously someone didnt follow protocol. Then the news mentioned that the worker had no business in that section of the track. Makes you wonder the mentality of the worker. Was she deaf? Was she mentally challenged? Im sorry that the worker got killed, but a LOT of things here just dont add up. Regardless Scream is still a wonderful coaster and I'll continue to ride it.

The person killed was Bantita Rackchamroon, 21. So a foreigner perhaps---I don't know.

I guess her mom never told her "look both ways before you cross". This applies to coaster trains too.

Suicide? Maybe. I wouldn't rule it out, but there's only one person who knows for sure. Her name is Bantita Rackchamroon and she's dead.

I know this sounds kinda gruesome, but if it was suicide and she did this while the park was open. Well you know.....Ouch!

I'm one of her junior at Chulalongkorn University. I really do believe that her mom absolutely told her to "look both ways before you cross" like Magnum Robert said.

i also think that she didn't kill herself....

I'm baffled. How does this happen? I can understand getting struck in the head if someone is standing near the track but not on it.

So, was the ride shut down for the day...or for many days afterwards?

Lawman: I'm one of her junior at Chulalongkorn University.

What does that mean?

lawman: I really do believe that her mom absolutely told her to "look both ways before you cross". i also think that she didn't kill herself....

If mommy did tell her to "look both ways"---and "she didn't kill herself" then she's extremely stupid. What other explanation could there be then other than stupidity???

Sounds like it was a suicide to me too.

I will go on the record though by saying that in a noisy park, and if one's mind just isn't paying attention, it is possible to be unaware that the train is in operation.

If you've ever walked train tracks for several miles, you'll know what I'm talking about.

I think it was suicide. Don't they sound a loud siren type of thing before the ride starts to run in the morning to keep that from happening.

Yes I can understand that the park can get loud, but you have to ride or see Scream to know what i mean. This is a VERY loud ride. No matter how many folks are in the park, no matter how much music is blaring, there is NO way you cant hear this coaster. My final analysis is that it was either suicide or stupidity, no ifs, ands, or butts. Yeah it sounds cruel but that is the only explanation. And Coasterkid, dont quote me here, but a lot of coasters do actually sound an alarm when they're turned on in the mornig. So, what she didnt hear that either? There is just wayyy too many precautions to roller coaster operations that she clearly didnt follow. And im still not ruling out the "chain dog" making a lot of noise as the train went up the lift hill. This is a hint and a half that you need to get off the track.

One more thing I want to add. WHERE during the course did she get hit at? Scream is about 4,000 feet long. I can ALMOST understand if she got hit after the first drop before the loop, but if she got hit at the 3800 foot mark, i mean come onnnnn. At that point you had well over a minute to realize the train is running the course

Here's my theory. I dont think it was a suicide, I just dont, but....Since Scream is 4 abrest, the outside two seats hang over the edge of the track. Maybe the woman tried to duck down to get out of the train's way, and just over-estimated the clearance between herself and the ride seat. It's only a theory, but either way, that totaly sucks.

I'm her junior in the university, don't you get this sentence -Magnum Robert?? I think it has this word in the dictionary o_O'' It means that i'm studying in the same major as her but a year later than her. Understand?!?

Are you guys feeling so great to complain about her ability at that horrible time of her life?? you keep complaning about the dead one. Don't you think you're all rude?? Mind if I ask you to, at least, respect her.. respect someone who didn't even know you and now she has already passed away? I think it such a contemptible thing to keep complaining on someone whom you didn't even know or seen her, an especially, when she has already passed away. Do american ppl has a manner to respect dead people? or you just skip over their head?
Come on man~ she has family, friends and many ppl who love her so much and they do feel deeply sad for this tragedy.
Please respect them too.
May I ask you a question? What if this tragedy happens to your family member or someone you love, will you say he/she deserves to die 'coz of his/her stupidity?? will you say that after they're gone??
This is just a tragedy, an accident which no one desires. Please stop guessing or do something so, like you are a detective or something. I think if she's willing to suicide herself, she wouldn't has gone so far to USA. There're many places for her to suicide herself here, in Thailand.
So please, stop bugging her...
