News: Scottish coaster halts, riders rescued

Posted at 10:50 AM EDT (1450 GMT)

Apr. 26th, 2004 -- On Saturday, firefighters and police were called to M&D's Theme Park to rescue those trapped on the Tornado after the ride came to a halt. No one was injured, and it is undertermined weather the coaster rolled back due to wind or lubricant.

The ride is closed and an investigation has been launched, which seems particularly important after a teenager fell to her death at Oakwood Leisure Park just over a week before. It is unclear from the article whether this was an actual rollback or whether the coaster came to a stop on a relatively flat piece of track.

For more details see the BBC news site.

From picture number 11 on RCDB--it doesn't look like a flat piece of track to me--the must have been some kind of problem. That's a great looking coaster for such a small footprint.

It appears to be on a slope. Generally a wheel failure would cause the train to roll back. This case it may have not been steep enough to cause the train to start rolling.

Damaged berring causing it to seize seems like the most probable cause. Could have been another mechanical failure of the train.

Does not look like it was simply a rollback caused by wind or cold.

Yeah, I'd suspect the problem was mechanical----not weather related.
