News: CT shows inspections; MA bans lapbars

Posted at 11:07 AM EDT (1507 GMT)

May. 4th, 2004 -- Connecticut state officials are heading to Lake Compounce to show the public how they inspect rides for safety.  This was done because of several media inquiries as to how they deal with safety.

Lake Compounce is no stranger to fatal events.  Between 1999 and 2001, three people were killed in three separate events involving rides.

This all comes on the heels from when Stanley Mordarsky, 55, was thrown from the Superman Ride of Steel coaster at Six Flags New England.  Since then, the Department of Public Safety in Massachusetts has banned any ride that uses the "t-bar" style lapbar restraint found on rides like Superman Ride of Steel pending the completion of their investigation.

The accident was the fifth involving Intamin restraints.  Just two weeks ago, a 16-year-old girl died when she fell from Hydro, an Intamin River Plunge flume, at Oakwood theme park.  In 2001, a 40-year-old woman fell and died from Perilous Plunge, another Intamin River Plunge flume.  State officials said the restraint system was flawed, but Intamin said that the woman was too large and should not have been let on.  The ride later reopened with additional safety harnesses.

In 1999, a 12-year-old boy died from a fall from an Intamin free-fall ride, and a man was thrown from another Superman coaster at Six Flags Darien Lake.  The man survived with only minor injuries, and investigators said the restraints worked properly, but cited the possible weight of the man, who was around 300 pounds, in the incident.

Woah. I hope the restraint wasn't the fault of the accident, because if they have to change the restraints on Superman, I'm certain it's not going to be the number one steel coaster ever again.

I just hope I get to ride it with the T-bars if they have to change them. I can only hope, though. Boy, do I hope the restraints didn't play a factor. But if you think about the other incidents, that's probably the case. But it could also be that these people were not in the right shape to ride (the overweight woman on Perilous Plunge or possibly the guy with cerebral palsy on S:ROS). I think the girl who fell out of Hydro was standing up and playing with her coat.

Oh boy. At least inspecting everything will put some people at ease. I just hope everything passes.

Isn't this the same system used on TTD and MF? Kinda scary when you think about it... lol

Edh... if you read the story, they only banned the T-bar style lapbars. Other lapbars are still usable. I had to shorten the headline.

FlyinBack: They are, but they aren't. The TTD ones (and Xcelerator) are more contoured and have a bend. MF is more straight like the other lapbars on Intamin rides.

I would assume they'd get new trains with restraints like Goliath's.

I found this in another article:
"After they inspect all of the mechanical, they also inspect the cages to make sure they are rock solid and that they are good in working condition, because apparently, that’s what failed when Stanley Mordarsky was ejected from the Superman ride"
it's about the lake compounce inspections.
Out of curiousity, what component is the "cage" on a rollercoaster train? I've never heard that term used before (then again, I don't read much about train and restraint design either)

I love the T-bar--you no longer have to climb into a car--it more open and free'er feeling. I think they make the ride more enjoyable with just the T-bar.

So which restraints were like the ones on S:ROS? The ones like MF or the ones like TTD?

Doesn't ride of steel also have a seat belt? What other rides at SFNE have a t-bar?

There is no such thing as a "cage" unless that's their internal term for the area encompassing the rider (which includes restraints). We call them specifically by their name... lapbar and seatbelt, or the restraint system as a whole.

I was wondering about that too, but I think either he was misquoted or talking about another ride type.

Robert: the ones like MF.
