News: Six Flags America Closes Superman

Posted at 8:28 AM EDT (1228 GMT)

May. 6th, 2004 -- LARGO, MD -- Six Flags America has closed it's own Superman: Ride of Steel roller coaster in response to a death on a similar ride at Six Flags New England.

Six Flags Spokeswoman Debbie Nauser said it is company policy to shut down rides in other parks that are the same or similar in other parks until investigators can determine what happened.

In Massachusetts, state officials have said all rides that use T-bar style restraints will remain closed until they can be inspected.

Intamin AG is the manufacturer of each Superman roller coaster in question.

I hate this. This really makes me pissed off. Why can't they just let it go. I do have emotion, and know that death is unwanted, but can't they just remake the restraints?!?!?!?!? OTSR would suck. This might have triggered the worst coaster safety issue ever.

Yeah, buddy. This is a serious issue and I think it is the right move to take any possible precautions until they finish their investigation and decide how to deal with the problem. Just because a few people are going to have to skip a ride on a roller coaster is not a catastrophe.

If the lapbar and the seatbelt are secured correctly, there should be no way for you to come out. I have noticed that ride ops check to make sure that the seatbelts are fastened, but not that they are tight. That might be part of the problem. I actually have more faith in the seatbelt.

It is obvious that we are going to have to wait for the report before the rides are reopened. Does anyone know when the report is due to be released?

With the number of times if ridden SROS @ SFA I can surely tell you there is no "design flaw" with restraints. Having been on it a good 300+ times now I'm sure that if there was a flaw I would have died by now... hehe... In n e case, this sucks, the only ride @ SFA thats worth riding more then a couple times is closed... Hopefully they can inspect it REALLY soon and have it open next weekend.

I can understand why this ride was closed. I just don't agree with it---especially since it appears to be human (ride-op) error.

I think this will only escalate the problem. I'm sure closing this ride will/was on the news in MD. A lot of people will now think that this ride is unsafe because they closed it. And that will decrease attendance at the park.

I had to correct a lot of peeps at my school who thaught that it was the ride at sfa, not sfne... so theres no doubt this will hurt the ride. But hey, more rides for me, it could use a shorter line. I remember once shockwave at PKD reopened after its accident, for like 2 weeks it had NO line, then ppl forgot i guess.

I doubt they will go all out and add OTSR's to the S:ROS's... probably do something similar to Dragster with curved lapbars and maybe some sort of restraint around the lower legs/ankles.

It really sucks they had to close all of them.. but they are covering their butts and I dont think Six Flags could handle a lot of lawsuits right now! And besides.. what were the chances that S:ROS at SFA would be up and running two trains without breaking down every few minutes anyways? Ride Wild One instead!
