News: Six Flags Great America employee dies

Posted at 10:15 PM EDT (0215 GMT)

Jun. 17th, 2004 -- A 52-year-old employee of Six Flags Great America has died at a hospital in Milwaukee after accidents suffered May 29 at the Ragin' Cajun ride. He was a resident of Zion, Ill.

This news follows reports on the web by guests that witnessed the ride closure, ambulance, and stretcher. However, the accident was not confirmed until today. Most of these rumors had died down as no official news release was made.

Details are still sketchy from the original incident, but sources have indicated that the employee was in a restricted area of the ride where it reaches the ground. The employee was in the area without the proper lockout procedures.  The employee was struck in the upper torso region by the car as it traversed the course.

Though there are few details at the present, please see Channel3000.com for a brief story and possible updates.

Kyle Rehm contributed to this report.

Another employee related fatality on a coaster at an SF park? first we had that employee hit & killed by a Scream! train while crossing the track during morning test runs & now this!

Unlike the Scream! incident this fatality is on a new attraction & I guess we'll get more details just as soon as it becomes available, the only question now is what was he doing on the track while the ride was running anyhow?

I hate it when people die. I don't care what the cause is. I just hate it when people die. But this person should have been watching out for the cars.

You know, they run these rides all over Europe and the UK without problems, yet bring one into a Six Flags park and someone dies. They can bring them to other places in the USA, but at a Six Flags park, death is imminent (I mean, I'm just waiting for that guy in the advert to fall over and twitch like a hatter).

I will never understand how accidents like this happen, how hard is it to think about whether or not the coaster is running when you are next to it?

Man this has been a terrible year for the amusement industry.

I'm still amazed at how many people (employees) will go in the restricted area of coasters, and not expect for a coaster train to come down the track.

I wonder why SFGam didn't say anything about this earlier.

Its the employee's fault........no one should be in a restricted area of a ride without following the proper lockout procedures

Wow, that sucks. You'd think the employee would know not to be in a restricted area---especially since this same thing happened to another employee earlier in the year (different park, but the employees should still know)
