News: Cedar Point trip ends in tragedy

Posted at 12:16 AM EDT (0416 GMT)

Jun. 24th, 2004 -- A multivehicle collision on Ohio Route 2 left six people returning home from Cedar Point dead on Monday.

Darryl K. Scott, 44, daughters Brandi Scott, 14, Alexis Howard, 9, and Alecia Howard, 7; niece Ariel Scott, 12; girlfriend Shannon Scott, 24; and Amber Channey, 6, were returning home to Michigan from a trip to Cedar Point when they were struck by an eastbound tractor-trailer on Ohio Route 2 at 11:46 p.m. on Monday, June 21.

The family was riding in a Cadillac Escalade that was behind three other cars in the westbound lane of Route 2. The first car in the line, a Chevrolet Blazer, crossed over to the eastbound lane and struck the oncoming truck. The truck then collided head-on with Scott's Escalade.

The Escalade was found lying upside-down in a nearby marsh. Brandi Scott was thrown from the vehicle and suffered from spinal cord injuries while the rest of the passengers who remained in the truck died from injuries or drowning.

The trip had been planned by Darryl to alleviate some of the emotional stress that his daughters had been experiencing since the death of their mother from cancer last fall.

Route 2 has history of incidents similar to this one. In 1997, 30 miles from Cedar Point, a group of five teenagers and one adult were killed when their van was struck by a tractor-trailer.

Local citizens have raised concern about the safety of Route 2. A campaign has been started in an attempt to get the truck drivers to slow down on the highway by reducing the speed limit by 5 miles per hour and increasing the amount of police radar monitoring.

It really shocked me to see that happen... on a road that I used to take. It's partially the reason I now take Ohio 51 to Ohio 163, then get on Ohio 2 near Port Clinton (where it's four lane freeway).

The circumstances are truly horrible, and I really sympathize with the only survivor and their relatives.

Wow, that's depressing.

I feel terrible for the entire family, especially since it was a trip that was supposed to relieve stress for his daughters. I can't imagine what that surviving girl's life is going to be like now. Hopefully they enjoyed the park and got to spend some of their last hours together as a family.

Wow. 2004 is not a good year for the industry, as I've said before. This is just awful. I don't really know what to say, except I hope Cedar Point isn't associated with this - IE "Cedar Point? No I don't want to go there; that family was killed after they went there"

Cedar Point didn't have anything to do with the actual accident though, so its hardly a blow to the industry, unless the media starts saying so.

I read about this in the paper yesterday. It was kinda creepy because I live all the way in MD and am going up for a week beginning on Sunday. They only had a brief paragraph about it, but it was still depressing. My thoughts are with the family

I read this in various papers near Akron. I have driven that stretch of route 2 before, most recently last month. The truck traffic is one reason my family takes the Ohio Turnpike to CP instead of route 2. A little out of the way, but a lot safer in the long run. And if it is the stretch of roadway I am thinking of, then it is one of my favorite places to drive through. I believe that area is West of the Davis-Besse plant.

I'd like to know why the Suburban went left of center (undoubtely though drowsiness).

Why do they do stories on this kind of stuff? It's like their saying it's CP's fault the family got in the car accident.

When i first heard about it, i had gotten back from cp that night. a few days later, i realized that my friend and i were in line behind them on a spinny ride. i live near cp, 1-1 1/2 hr's, and rt. 2 is always a way that people in this area can take. but it's always been dangerous. when i heard about it, i felt so bad. i really hope the survivor and family are doing alright. terrible story

Just goes to show that some people have no class.

I remember this accident----certainly nothing to laugh about. what a shame.
