"rolled over a frayed metal cable"
Does this make sense to anybody? Do they mean it was laying across the track? Everybody's reporting this a little bit differently. Hard to make any sense out of it.

I think the steel cable that pulls the catch-car and the train frayed pretty good for that to happen. In addition, the grease burns sound pretty consistent.

Hope the riders are doing ok.
The hot fluid could also be the water sprayed on the cable. I'm sure it mixes with grease and is very hot. I figure the cable snapped, the pieces went up into the air, and the riders in the front got hit with the metal shavings and water spray.

They actually run TTD with a frayed cable? It might not be financially feasible for them to always use a new cable, but I think this was an accident waiting to happen. The last time this happened no one was hurt, but I'm astonished that CP would continue this practice, which I believe they also apply to MF's lift cable.

Whenever a cable is frayed, they always replace it, because repairs on cables hardly ever work. With the force needed to pull the train to 120mph, they can't possibly run it with a frayed cable.
Since it snapped in 2001, MF's cable has been replaced one other time when they spotted that it was about to happen again.

Wow...I was there on Sunday and I rode it....and yeah I agree with JumboJet, how does it roll over a frayed metal cable? But wow....I think they should completely re-do the whole ride so it actually runs at least like 90% of the time, and stuff like this doesnt happen

Its not the coaster makers fault that a ride breaks down or someone get hurt sometimes.the six flags thing was the parks fault atleast thats what i read.it may be the weather which plays a big park how the coasters work or dont work.alot of accidents happend due to people who dont know how to act like adults when they go on them and act stupid and get them or other people hurt.ttd is the only coaster of its kind and will have things like this happend.it could be a default cable too which happends sometimes.even to the car parts and things like that.you wont know if it is default sometimes.

I would suggest they revisiting the design of the launch. There is water pouring out of everywhere on that launch. The water wasn't always there...was it? There has got to be a design flaw that band-aids will not fix. Either redesign the launch to be safer and more relliable, or shorten the hill / reduce the speed, change the cables out every other week, or relieve some of the load by taking a car off of each train...again.
What is the status of Storm Runner and Xcelerator?

That really sounds like it would suck. I feel bad for those people and I hope that Intamin and Cedar Point can get the problems fixed as soon as possible.

Think they'll fix it or scrap it? I know that sounds insane, but Cedar Point's track record speaks pretty strongly on this matter. Rides that malfunction on a regular basis or cause a public safety concern usually end up in the preverbial scrap heap. This ride has caused CP nothing but grief, and now this. When it's working, it's a great ride. However, my guess is that Chain Dawg is right. They are going to find that the entire launch system needs to go back to the drawing board, and in my opinion, the cost of refitting it will not be worth it. If they can get Intamin to pony up a good deal on a new coaster because of this, I think they will replace it.
However, you all remember my inside source and how I called the sale of Six Flags WOA months before it actually happened. I will be in contact with them again soon. Hopefully, I will be able to let you know what will be happening.

This is definetly not a good year for the amusement industry, let alone Intamin. This is a terrible accident. What I don't understand is how the operators or mechanics can't see a cable laying on the track. I mean, isn't the cable pretty visible? All I can say is that I hope the riders are ok, including the one guy/kid that had a pretty good size pice of metal in his chest from what the news video said. And let's just hope something like this never happens again.

I was there yesterday, Tuesday, and luckily for me I have ridden TTD before. Although that was my seventh trip there this year and 5 of the days it has been down all day, once they were installing a new luanch cable. I think the News has done a very bad job with this story, I have a fairly good understanding of how the luanch and braking systems work on TTD and in no situation do you rollover a cable. You travel on top off a cable that is also traveling at the same speed you are, since it is what pulls you to 120mph. This is another situation were "The News" has showed me why I try not to get my News from them. I do hope that all injured parties are or will be ok.

I was there on Monday 7/12 and TTD was experiencing a lot of rollbacks throughout the day. Glad I got in my two rides.
As for the water, it was explained to me last year that it's there to cool the cable. Yes..it has been there in one form or another since about (I'm guessing) mid to late last year.
