News: Oblivion under fire

Posted at 6:27 PM EDT (2227 GMT)

Aug. 2nd, 2004 -- The vertical drop coaster Oblivion at Alton Towers, one of only two such coasters like it in the world, faces the risk of being altered or shut down.

Stephen Roper and his wife Suzanne have brought a 25 year-old lawsuit against Alton Towers, claiming the noise from Oblivion disturbs their daily life. After visiting the couple's home, 100 yards from the park entrance, Judge Timothy Gascoigne ruled in favor of the Ropers, saying that the ride violates the Environmental Protection Act of 1990.

Judge Gascoigne noted that the "Don't look down" message, played as the cars hang motionless over Oblivion's vertical drop, is the main cause of noise, as well as the sounds of the coaster's machinery. He also said that the noise from fireworks and corporate events contribute to the problem, but Oblivion is the main culprit.

Alton Towers quashed the rumors that the ruling would force the park to close.

How are they going to change Oblivion except taking out the "Don't look down" noise? I sure hope that they don't close it down.

I wonder if Alton Towers could just move those idiots into another house somewhere else free of charge, just to get them to shut up!

These people live next door to an amusement park, what do they expect? Move them to another house or something, but it'd be absolutely insane to deprive hundreds of thousands of people the thrill of Oblivion so these two can have a little quiet. Buy some earplugs.

You know, its people like these that give theme parks and, specifically, rollercoasters a bad rap.

Do that sound proofing to their house. That's my suggestion :).

People seem to be able to live next to busy interstates pretty well, and those don't even close down at night. I don't see how this could be as bad as they are saying it is. Of course, I haven't lived in there house so I guess I don't have any room to talk.

I think they should customize Oblivion a little bit more. Even though it would be closed for more than a season.

1. Fill the track with sand.

2. Customize the train to have headsets in the restraints to do the "Dont Look Down" noise.

That should shut SOME of those locals up.

These people were there first but they still suck.

I think the best thing to do is wrap the oblivion in a big soundproof tube tube Hulk style.

Then they could also have sound effects and strobe lights to add to the feeling of speed like rock n roller.

Apparently people living next to this guy's factory are making the same claims. What goes around, comes around. My suggestion to Alton is to erect those soundwalls to keep the noise from one precious resident. While it won't stop the noise fireworks make, it will stop the other stuff, or at least muffle it. PLus on both sides of the wall, a large mural could be painted of what it may look like on the toher side of the wall.

Well lets be realistic here. Ive seen a lot of loud B&M coasters before but just how loud is Oblivion? Im thinking these folks got their underwear in a knot or they are just too close to the friggin park. Bottom line Alton Towers, so Ive heard, is an amazing park and Im sure they have money to either spend on moving the morons away from the park or doing like B&M did on Talon. Fill the support and track with gravel to dampen the noise. This will cost money but at least they wont have to close a coaster down. Also Alton Towers is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, so I HIGHLY doubt that house was there first. My question is who was the idiot that built a house so close to an amusement park in the first place?

^ Ever stop to think the house was built before any huge (and loud) coasters and other attractions?

lryboy: "You know, its people like these that give theme parks and, specifically, rollercoasters a bad rap."

Why? Because these people don't want to be subjected to loud noise---all day, every single day, for months on end? I don't blame them.

Aaron: "Move them to another house or something, but it'd be absolutely insane to deprive hundreds of thousands of people the thrill of Oblivion so these two can have a little quiet"

Just because people have fun, doesn't mean others' right to peace and quiet should be infringed upon.

Homer: "1. Fill the track with sand. "

How do you know the supports aren't already filled with sand?

NELLY: "These people were there first but they still suck."

Why? Because they want to enjoy their home? Imagine that!!!!

Come on people, stop thinking about only yourselves. Seriously.
