News: Coaster disaster averted by electric eye

Posted at 1:37 AM EDT (0537 GMT)

Aug. 3rd, 2004 -- A ride on Geagua Lake's Double Loop roller coaster could have ended in disaster if an electronic eye hadn't noticed a problem.

The coaster's safety bars are locked when the ride operators step on a pedal. However, the coaster's ride operators failed to lock the safety bars on the front car of a train where two people were sitting. Before the train could make it up the lift hill, an electric eye noted the problem and stopped the coaster.

Geauga Lake has terminated the employment of the three ride operators, citing safety violations.

Wonder why the ride ops failed to lock it? I would guess it was just carelessness, but it seems like a pretty big thing to just forget.

Well, if they didn't do their job, then they're not working, so bam, fired!

Probably because they almost killed people, and to not check the restraints shows that they are extremely irresponsible.

Thank god I'm not one of those ops. If I got the signal that I didn't lock a car, I probably would have had a heart attack, especially if it didn't catch the error.

For those of you wondering how this all works:

The same system is on Corkscrew at CP. The "eye" works by detecting a metalic object, similar to proxy sensors. As the train leaves the station, this eye is placed exactly on level to where an "up" pedal would be, it counts the number of pedals. It SHOULD count 6 (or is it 7 on DL?), and if it counts lower than six (seven??) pedals it stops the train at the base of the lift. Note: when a pedal is down the harnesses are unlocked, and when a pedal is up the harnesses are LOCKED. Down is bad, up is good :)!

Although, if they would have checked the harnesses like they are supposed to, they would have noticed the harnesses weren't locked and that the pedal was down... Sounds quite careless to me...

Even with the restaints unlocked, it is very unlikely that someone would have fallen out. It is just 2 back-to-back loops...right?

Uh...I think you put too much faith in...never mind...when you go back up the hill-neg g's-throws you right out. could ruin your day at G Lake. ...and you'd never get to see if the Cedar Fair season pass will work at both parks next year.

That stinks that they still have the six flags employees. Next year they will get different employees right?

I think it will take a couple years for Cedar Fair to Un-Flag that place. I had a couple bad experiences there when it was Six Flags, and I have not been back since...even after they sent me free tickets! I may give it a try next year, but probably not.

This story is really not that big a deal. Some workers skipped a step, and the electronic system caught it just like it was designed to. End of story.

Gotta fire 'em though. Most people would not want to go to a park that keeps employees around who forget to lock the safety restraints of looping coasters.

I'm surprised that there are rides that still allow for this type of restraint where workers have to physically step on the restaint pedal or what have you. It just seems like a lot of trouble and an increased risk. Also wouldn't the riders have noticed this I would guess. Wouldn't the restraints be moving and not staying in place, I would just think that the riders would have noticed that.

MachChunk - "Why would their employments be terminated?"

A better question to ask would be "why should negligent ride hosts be allowed to stay and risk other guests' lives?"

JumboJet - I disagree. This story is a big deal.
