News: Power outage strikes Knott's

Posted at 6:01 PM EDT (2201 GMT)

Aug. 5th, 2004 -- A large power outage hit over 100,000 customers in Orange County yesterday afternoon. One such affected customer was Knotts Berry Farm.

The lack of power left the park's rides inoperative, stranding cars and trains on lift hills. Park employees began immediately escorting stuck visitors off of the rides. Power was restored to Knott's Berry Farm after about twenty minutes.

In addition to affecting Knott's, the power outage also caused problems in Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Fullerton, and Westminster. It is still unclear as to what may have caused the loss of power.

That must of sucked to be stuck on a ride. Glad everything went well.

Glad no one was hurt and everything went well. Hope this doesn't happen any time soon again.

One thing I can't understand with parks and power outages. Why can't they have back up generators to give them enough power to fun some of their rides for a few more minutes just to get any trains off the lift of coasters. After all the rides are down from the lift and the trains back safely into the station, turn off the generators and wait for the power to come back on. I'm sure that it wouldn't be extremely expensive compared to all the money spent on everything else that goes into a park. Keep in mind, I'm only talking about enough power to keep some of the coasters running for a few minutes, NOT the entire park for an extended amount of time.

^ As far as I know, most rides do have either a backup generator, or winch of sorts.
