News: Six Flags tries to block waterpark

Posted at 6:10 PM EDT (2210 GMT)

Aug. 6th, 2004 -- Ever since Six Flags New Orleans opened as Jazzland in 2000, a waterpark has been an integral part of future plans. Now Zephyr Waterpark Partners is planing a waterpark on nearby Zephyr Fields, and Six Flags is doing what it can to stop it.

Six Flags has claimed that New Orleans is not capable of handling two competing waterparks and says one must be canceled. It is the Zephyr Fields park, Six Flags supporters say, that needs to be canceled, because the proposed park at Six Flags New Orleans would contribute far more to the local economy then the one at Zephyr Fields. Six Flags proponents also argue that it isn't right to lease public land to run a private business, and that the Six Flags park is already further along in the planning stages.

Supporters of the Zephyr Fields plan are baffled by Six Flags' opposition and are curious as to why Six Flags has only now opposed the park, since plans have been around last year. Furthermore, many wonder why park giant Six Flags would be concerned about a small local waterpark.

Well right now, anything could kill SF, and the last thing they want is another park struggeling.

I'm siding with the Zephyr Fields supporters on this one. Even given the situation Six Flags is in, I can't see a small local park posing a serious threat to a giant corporation.

SFNO is already struggling, so I don't think a small little water park is going to make a big difference.

I think the Zephyr Fields people should be able to build whatever they want.

This is like Six Flags saying they have a right to control all entertainment in New Orleans. Six Flags should lose this fight I hope.

Six Flags New Orleans isn't struggling... The title is actually a bit incorrect. It is the city of NEW ORLEANS trying to block the waterpark. They have financial ties to the park (they lease the land) and depend on growing attendance to make even more money. They are trying to make sure nothing gets in its way, even if the small water park wouldn't really affect a Six Flags water park

By the way, waterparks DO make the difference for amusement parks. If SFNO were to build a waterpark, it would more than likely place them in the top 50 U.S. parks. Water parks can attract over 350,000 new patrons, and that's a LOT. They also can increase per cap spending by giving people more to do.

I don't see how anyone can try and block other legal businesses from opeing up in the area because it's competition. That's just like Six Flags though, to shy away from competition since they have an inferior product. Look at Cedar Point, how many other water parks and other attractions are in the area or are opening soon. You don't hear about CP trying to stop them. They know they have a great product and thus don't fear other businesses as a second rate Six Flags park does.

I side with Zephyr Fields park on this matter. If SF doesn't like it, then too bad for them. Why should SF be allowed to monopolize the area?
