Aug. 6th, 2004 -- Ever since Six Flags New Orleans opened as Jazzland in 2000, a waterpark has been an integral part of future plans. Now Zephyr Waterpark Partners is planing a waterpark on nearby Zephyr Fields, and Six Flags is doing what it can to stop it.
Six Flags has claimed that New Orleans is not capable of handling two competing waterparks and says one must be canceled. It is the Zephyr Fields park, Six Flags supporters say, that needs to be canceled, because the proposed park at Six Flags New Orleans would contribute far more to the local economy then the one at Zephyr Fields. Six Flags proponents also argue that it isn't right to lease public land to run a private business, and that the Six Flags park is already further along in the planning stages. Supporters of the Zephyr Fields plan are baffled by Six Flags' opposition and are curious as to why Six Flags has only now opposed the park, since plans have been around last year. Furthermore, many wonder why park giant Six Flags would be concerned about a small local waterpark. For more information on this story, see The Times-Picayune.
