News: Hip-hop fest cancelled at Kings Dominion

Posted at 6:09 PM EDT (2209 GMT)

Aug. 17th, 2004 -- For seven years, Paramount's Kings Dominion (PKD) and Black Entertainment Television have teamed up to create the park's annual College Hip-Hop Fest. Now, however, the park has decided to discontinue the event.PKD general manager Richard A. Zimmerman attributes the cancellation to low student turnout. African-American students from East Coast colleges have typically been the primary performers and visitors to the festival.

However, the sinking number of visitors may not be the only reason for the festival's demise. Although PKD does not mention it, the Hip-Hop Fest has been linked to a number of shootings. Last year, three people were shot, including one who was killed. Two shootings occurred in the park's parking lot, another happened at night after the festival. Despite additional security, another homicide was committed at this year's festival.

I definitely think that this is because of the type of crowd it draws, not the waning attendence.

I think any park that hosts a hip-hop fest is asking for trouble. I'm sure Al Sharpton and Jesse will now cry racism for cancelling the event.

I think it was a good idea to cancel it. Events which cause violence like this shouldn't continue.

Good idea to cancel this event. It probally scares more people away from the park then it brings.

I'm glad to hear they cancelled the black party. These types of events shouldn't be allowed at parks or anywhere else for that matter. There used to be some kind of black college party at a forest preserve near me in the bordering suburbs. It was called a "freak-nic". Well, the one year it happened, there were shootings and sexual assualts on women in the area. It was disgusting. And I'll say what just about everyone is thinking, why can't they just stay in their own neighborhood. The area I live in is mostly white and that's why we live there, we don't want them by our house....or at our parks. They just cause problems and ruin everything.

This behavior which lead to the fest cancelation, and the behavior you described, Coasterlove, is not indicative of the black community. Asians, whites, Middle-Easterners, Native Americans, Latinos, any of these ethnic groups could perpetuate the type of behavior you talked about, and the shootings which lead to this cancelation.
Had it been a party of any of these groups and such violence occured, it would have been canceled as well.

Yeah, any group could perpetuate that type of behavior,
BUT THEY DIDNT.

Being "able to" and actually doing it are two different things.

I've been to PKD on the day of that event. It was scary. The "attendees" felt as though it was a right of entitlement to just about everything.

Its funny to see how some people see things different. I've been to this event and i can say i had more fun those weekends then any other time at any other park. I can tell by the comments that most of you are older white people who have one, never attended a hbcu, and two have no clue about the culture that you speak of. Twice as many people die or get sent to the hospital at rock shows but you never hear anyone grip about that. The events don't cause the violence the people do. And no matter what kind of music you listen to ie. rock, hip hop, clasical or country if your ignorant you will do ignorant things. A good example of ignorance is the person that commented "we don't want them by our house" trust me we don't want to be any closer to people like you than we have to and THATS THE BOTTEM LINE
