News: "Gay Day" under attack at SFOT

Posted at 5:54 PM EDT (2154 GMT)

Sep. 15th, 2004 -- A day after Muslim Day stirs up controversy at SFGAdv, another themed day, Six Flags Over Texas' "Gay Day", has been targeted by anti-gay groups.

ProtestGayDay.com has plans to assemble in front of the park on Sept. 18, the day of the event, intending to inform parkgoers that the amusement park will play host to thousands of homosexual visitors that day. The organizer of the protest, Rick Warden, denounces Six Flags for exposing visitors to "homosexual activities" without warning of the event beforehand.

The protest will occur from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gay Day is not officially sponsored by Six Flags.

Editorial opinion: Can't these people just go to a park without getting heckled and harassed? Groups like this really upset me. Why don't they just hold a special Heterosexual Day? Cut these people a break already!

This is bull****! Some of you may not know this, but people dont choose to be gay. It happens naturally. So, protesting against gays is not much different than making fun of mentally retarted people....you just dont do that.

Just like you shouldn't use that type of language on TN.

I think its sad that so many people have to go out and protest on these days. They should just stay away from the park that day.

People are not born gay or naturally gay. Every gay person I've talked to MADE THE CHOICE to be gay. I made the choice to be straight.

I have to say this pisses me off!

I don’t see why they can’t just let gays have their day at the park. I personally see no reason it should be protested. The day is no different then say a Christian day where the park contains predominantly church groups. Honestly though, what is protesting the day going to do anyway? It’s not going to stop gay park goers from going on that day. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if some go only because they want to prove the protesters wrong. I know I would.

If you go to the site mentioned in the article there is a big "Jesus Saves" on the side... oh let me guess... their only reason they don’t like the gay day thing (and probably gays in general) is because god said its bad... well news flash... we don’t all believe the same thing as you so don’t push your views off on us. These people should stop hiding behind their religion and actually evaluate why they like or don’t like a group of people and not let religion blind them.

Oh yeah, Rick Warden (whoever the hell you are) I’ve got a news flash for you... Your and idiot! What "homosexual activities" do you think will be going on? Honestly its people like this Rick guy who disgust me. Gays aren’t going to do anything bad at the park... do you really believe that having gays in a park will corrupt families going to the park? I don’t think so...

Anyway, If you didn’t notice much of my post was written as if I was speaking to the ProtestGayDay people... well that’s just what I would like to say to them (well there is more I would like to say to them but we do have rules on this site) That’s just my opinion though.

Now I’m sorry if my opinions have offended anyone… that wasn’t my intent. I truly am sorry if they have.

Sorry for the double post...

Bryan could you tell my why someone would chose to be discriminated against? I know I wouldn’t choose it. I for one believe it’s not a choice but the way some people are (either it be they were born that way or environmental factors).

I think a person has to be born with a tendency to become homosexual, but they ultimately make the choice themselves.

Bryan, you're completely wrong. It's a scientific fact that homosexuality comes naturally.

I agree w/ Graham. What 'homosexual activities'? Secret hand signals? Knees that bend the other way? Secret rituals involving prayer rugs or saying 'I'm better than you cause I'm gay?'
Just gives bored people something to complain about.
But If want some irony, Adventureland Park in Des Moines IA holds a 'substance free' day every year. No alcohol (they have a grand beer pavilion) or tabbacco products, BUT (here's the irony and double standard) They give out free pop (caffeine) and a non-denomenational church service.

No it's not. Like Phil said, some people might have a TENDENCY(that's the only scientific fact), but it is ultimately their choice to decide if they are or not. The same way humans have a tendency to want to eat, but they make a choice if they want to fulfill their hunger for food or not.

Sorry Bryan, But I disagree with you. I will agree that maybe gays are born with a tendency to be gay. But I don’t think it’s a choice. I believe that if gays are born with a tendency (and not born fully gay... or something) then its environmental factors that made them gay. It’s not exactly the same as deciding to eat of not. There is a little more to it then that. Sure people might chose to "experiment" with the same sex but I don’t think people can decide to have an attraction to the same sex or the other; it’s just how they are.

I had a realative who commited suicide because "they couldn't stand being gay anymore".

If it's simply a choice, don't you think he would have just decided not to be gay anymore, rather than commiting suicide?

When Warren says "homosexual activites", according to the article, he's referring to people kissing and embracing others of the same gender. Don't these people have anything better to do?

SFOG Freak brings up a good point. If it is a choice then why would there be a high suicide rate amongst people who aren’t ok with the fact that they are a homosexual or a bisexual? Wouldn’t you think they would just change?

Also, SFOG Freak, sorry to hear about your relative.

Oh yeah, we have gotten a little side tracked from the topic at hand. So if possible could we get back on the topic of them protesting gay day? Thanks!

Well...so this whole "To Eat or Not To Eat" argument actually does work. If one "chooses" not to eat, they'll die. If one "chooses" not to do what there heart tells them to do, then they'll die as well. I really don't think it's a "choice".

As for going to a amusement park and protesting a "Church Day"...Count me In.

I will say, that any form of kissing at a park is offensive.

I am offended by any couple gay, STR8, lesbian showing signs of affection in public.
The thing that makes the most irritated is when STR8 couples holding hands whilst walking through Super-Walmart. "Oh honey, isn't this romantic?"
"Yes dear, super cheap crap always makes me amourous."
ICK!
Not to mention mothers changing diapers in public!
I remember working @ a MC-D's in SOCA before moving to IA and mothers would change diapers not more than three feet from others trying to eat a MCWhopper.
Not only bad taste, but bad hygene.....Why doesn't anyone protest that!?

Who cares? This is not an officially endorsed event. The park is not going to be open just to gays. If you hate being around others that you dont agree with this much then just stay home.

Duh.
