News: Man dies on fair ride

Posted at 1:48 AM EDT (0548 GMT)

Sep. 20th, 2004 -- A man died on a local fair ride. The ride had a mechanical failure and broke apart during operation. Many people suffered injuries and needed to be hospitalized. One man died at the hospital, while another person is in serious condition.

"It was really just a nightmare, a lot of children crying, mothers crying, more blood than I've ever seen," said Kathleen Madaus, a local witness. Her daughter Elizabeth also witnessed the accident. "I saw him about a foot off the ground and land on his face," Elizabeth said. "There were like 5-year-olds who had to see that and I feel bad for them."

The local authorities took the ride operator down to the station for questioning. The fair company that owns the ride said they would release no comment until the investigation is fully complete. One of the cars on the ride is visibly damaged.

Thats so sad. I wonder what type of ride it was. Could you imagine going to a fair and dying on a ride? That would stink.

I think CPdude05 meant basically dying because of a ride, not necessarily on the ride itself.

I don't really trust the fairs and carnivals. Look at many of the workers there, they're basically trash who probably didn't even finish high school and in some cases didn't even make it there in the first place. I also don't like how the rides are put together and taken apart in just a matter of days. How they couldn't notice the damage that was on the ride is upsetting.

I hate carnival/fair rides. I see a guy with 3 teeth operating it laughing at little kids when they scream, plus the rides temporary. Not fun at all.

I really feel bad for those kids that saw all of this. I would hate to be there when something like this happens, especially at a young age.
