Oct. 1st, 2004 -- In 1954, philanthropist Charles R. Wood founded the small Storytown USA amusement park on the edge of the Adirondacks in New York. Wood passed away yesterday at the age of 90, but what was his little family fun center is now the Great Escape amusement park. The theme of Storytown revolved around the world of nursery rhymes. When it opened, it was five acres large and had four employees, including Wood's wife. Today, Great Escape occupies 150 acres with over 125 different rides. In addition to Storytown USA, Wood owned several restaurants and hotels in the Lake George area. He was popularly known for his love of children and contributed to a variety of camps, libraries, theaters, and other worthy causes.
