News: Walt Disney World in union dispute

Oct. 26th, 2004 -- Walt Disney World's union employees are vehemently opposed to the park's latest contract offer, and now, they're taking the matter directly to the public.

Of Disney World's 53,000 employees, 22,000 of them are part of the Service Trades Council Union. Recently, union members have been handing out flyers at several places, including the Orlando airport and Philadelphia's Disney On Ice show. Union presidents say the goals of the public displays are to inform the public of their problems and to get Disney to agree with their requests.

Disney wants to significantly increase healthcare costs, eliminate overtime provisions, and prevent new employees from choosing a 401(k) plan over a pension plan. Talks between the amusement park and the union will resume tomorrow. The current contract expires Nov. 4.
